White roasted eel vinegared dish refreshing bite
Toku-Seiromushi Teishoku (Special Bamboo Steamed Set) (¥6100)
This set includes layers of rice and unagi, served with shirayaki sunomono (white roasted vinegared dish), liver soup, and pickles. The dish is made using a recipe that’s over 300 years old: rice coated in sauce is steamed, topped with grilled eel kabayaki, garnished with golden egg for added colour and flavour, and steamed again. The charcoal-broiled eel fillets rest on a bed of lightly flavoured rice in a steamer, topped with finely sliced egg, accompanied by a light eel liver soup.
While the eel was undeniably umami-rich, savoury, smoky, and soft in texture, I felt the dish could benefit from more unagi sauce for a bolder flavour. The rice, although moist and lightly seasoned, leaned towards being too subtle for my liking. Overall, it’s a good dish, but the lack of intensity in flavour was slightly disappointing, though, perhaps, this is just my personal preference.
Yanagawa, often referred to as the "Venice of Japan," offers a serene and enjoyable boat ride along its picturesque canals. The hour-long journey provides a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. The boatmen, with their engaging commentary, traditional Japanese songs, and stories about the town's history, make the ride both informative and entertaining. While the language spoken is Japanese, as a foreigner, you can simply relax and soak in the slow pace of life. It’s a charming way to experience Yanagawa’s unique perspective and appreciate the tranquil beauty of the waterways.
After the boat ride, I treated myself to a local specialty, Seiromushi. I headed to Motoshiya, which claims to be the founder of Unagi no Seiromushi, making it an obvious choice for this dish. Upon entering the tatami mat restaurant, I removed my shoes and was served a towel and a pot of green tea while waiting for the food.

This traditional and delicious dish provides a fitting conclusion to a relaxing day in Yanagawa, blending tranquility with authentic local flavours.
Enjoy the peace and unique tastes of Yanagawa! 😊
