[ Dessert Review ] Was very sullenly sitting in my room still feeling very under the weather and lamenting the lack of sweets at home, when a certain someone came to the rescue with these teeny toothsome treats from 2am:deseertbar!

He sent over two boxes: One was filled with adorable matcha madeleines, and the other with dainty strawberry financiers, with each set containing ten bite-sized, freshly baked — yes you read that right — little cakes (bonus: they don’t have cream on them too ahhh!). At 9pm. Love the modern conveniences of living in a city!

You know how even when you’re dining out, you rarely get the luxury of warm, made-to-order dessert? Now you can get that delivered to your doorstep! What bliss!

The madeleines were fluffy and light without feeling too porous nor spongey; these aren’t like the Japanese variants that are heavy with butter, and overly honeyed — they were sweet enough to satisfy my craving while still letting the slight bitter tinge of matcha shine through!

The financiers — which I tend to prefer, heh — were gorgeous! The strawberry was prominent in every bite without overpowering the cake’s innate almond fragrance; the edges were browned crisp and gave great texture contrast against the moist centre — I struggled to not eat all ten at a go because of how satisfying the eating experience was!

As someone who never found a reason to go to 2am:db, this just tipped my ambivalence over. I’m totally up for paying for well-made sweets (or any food really, heh), I was mainly swayed by naysayers claiming the items here are overpriced and subpar. When we can finally dine out again, you bet a certain someone and I are making a special trip down to enjoy their more elaborate creations!

An average plate of fries. The shoe-string fries were well-salted, but sadly the truffle flavour was not pronounced. However, it’s a decent dish for sharing and for those who want something savoury to cut through the sweetness of the desserts there. Or if you have a sweet tooth, you might want to skip this entirely and order another dessert instead.

I like to have my desserts with black coffee since it helps to cut through some of the sweetness and richness of desserts in general. This coffee tasted acidic which I don't appreciate, but the infusion of the cinnamon stick saved the day and gave it a warm, comforting aroma and a taste that is great year-round.

An apt name for the dish, this dessert was full of citrus flavour. From the konatsu (a Japanese citrus fruit) aerated cheesecake and chiffon cake, to the scoop of yuzu sorbet, to the white miso yuzu sauce, the dessert was tangy and with a good balance of sweet and sour flavours. The addition of Bergamot cheese to the dish added a hint of saltiness which made the dish even more refreshing. Overall a good choice of dessert for people looking for something lighter on the palette but without compromising on taste.

This dish comprised several strong flavours. The aerated frozen chocolate and salted caramel sauce it was covered in were sweet, while the Kochi yuzu sorbet was tart and refreshing. The accompanying chocolate soil was gritty and bitter. These components came together really well for a bite that was full of chocolate flavour but not overly decadent.

I wish I could identify what the remaining components of the dessert are, but to be honest, I don’t know. I just know that everything is really good.

Exquisite high tea by Janice Wong. In frame: X’mas Hat & X’mas Tree cake, Ruby Opera & Smoked Cheesecake, Diamond chocolate bons bons, cookies & Egg Nogs. Outside of frame: Two Men Bagel Special, marshmallows smore’s, cheese fondue with chips & spiced chocolate jelly. Lovely meal, friendly staff. Can’t wait to see JW next creation
