Reviews

From the Burpple community

The filling is so generous and everything about it was lovely, but the choux pastry doesn't work well

The place is a little touristy but still legit

In particular every component was good. Strong AF coconut milk, the pandan chendol has a nice pandan smell and is very soft. The gula melaka has great complexity and smokiness. Durian was absolutely intense and sweet as well, I'm surprised this wasn't MSW. However as it goes, altho they don't clash, the maw does tend to overpower everything else.

If you love your durian, this is a wonderful place to indulge in your cravings! The whole cafe is filled with the beautiful fragrance of fresh durian and we loved the dessert we got!

The durian chendol ($5.30) may be a small bowl, but it is packed full of flavour coming from the coconut milk and gula melaka and they gave a good scoop of fresh durian flesh that smooth and really fragrant! Definitely a heavenly bowl to share.

We got a quarter roll of their durian roll ($6.50), and we loved that the cream itself contains durian flesh! The flavour of the cream isn't as strong, but it is definitely more creamy. Overall a pretty good cake!

Working closely with Fook Gor Durian Farm in Raub, West Pahang, 99 Old Trees continues to reinvent their offerings made with the best Mao Shan Wang and D24 durians. In addition to the fresh durians, you can also get the lineup of Stinky durian desserts, ice cream and two new durian treats.

One of the latest highlights is the value-for-money Stinky Bomb ($1.80 per piece, minimum order of 5 pieces), a bite-sized ball of golden choux au craquelin with butter-sugar crumbed top and filling of Mao Shan Wang flesh and light cream. You will definitely not stop at one as you continue to pop these flavour bombs into your mouth. Not to be missed out on is the Stinky Roll ($6.50 for quarter piece, $25 for foot long), a new launch of fluffy sponge cake filled with fresh Mao Shan Wang flesh and French custard cream, a highly recommended treat that you can have it on your own or get the foot long to share with others. Other must-try desserts under the Stinky brand includes the Stinky Bowl ($5.50/$7) of durian mousse with a serving of D24 durian puree, Stinky Chendul ($3/$5) with homemade chendul jelly and a serving of durian flesh, and the Stinky Scoop ($28), a decadent treat of Mao Shan Wang ice cream.

It seems that the folks behind 99 Old Trees and Stinky’s by 99 Old Trees are pretty much on a roll — with the launch of their new space at Teo Hong Road, they have also re-released much of my favourite offerings that they previously serve at Owen Road Authentic Penang Chendul; they have also launched new creations such as the Stinky Roll, and now the Stinky Bomb — essentially a Mao Shan Wang Choux that I just simply could not resist but to make my way there for one.

Whilst choux puffs are known to be relatively pricey at several locations, the Stinky Bomb are probably the lowest priced choux around — they costs $1.80 each, though there is a minimum order of two pieces per order. I have had these pretty fresh out-of-the-oven; arrived the cafe at 11:45am and was told that they would only be available after a 10 minute wait as they had just a freshly baked a new batch for the day. Sinking our teeth into one, there is no denying on how crisp and light the exterior was; inside well-filled with Mao Shan Wang mousse that is fibrous and pungent — absolutely apt for durian lovers being pretty much a flavour bomb on its own. For those looking for a beverage to curb the inherent “heatiness” of the King of Fruits, pair the choux up with their selection of Chinese Tea which also helps to cleanse the palate.

With 99 Old Trees and Stinky’s by 99 Old Trees being all out innovative with their durian desserts, we really liked how they have placed a lot of thought into showcasing their expertise into the various applications through the items they have to offer. Looking forward to what they are coming up next here!
