Beratur and that previous edition of Line Clear (and currently, Deen Maju) blew me away, and I knew nothing in KL would ever be able to match up to those imperious heights. And I was right, for the most part. Until Nasi Lemak Ong came to Pavilion (Elite). First of all, yes - it's called Nasi Lemak Ong but it's actually a pork-free nasi kandar from Alor Star with no coconut milk in the curries. Sounds a bit suspect, sure, but at the time of tasting, it's also easily the best nasi kandar in KL and can stand up against a lot of joints in Penang soooooo

Get a mixed sambal/curry over the rice. It packs a real spicy punch for a mall outlet though, so ask for that to be toned down if you prefer a less fiery plate. As for everything else...pretty much everything we tried ranged from good to great. The black beef curry was thick and heavy without being too sweet, the petai and bamboo shoots were fresh and crisp, the mutton curry was glorious (but the mutton itself was a bit tough), and the giant prawn was a delight. Tender, sweet and plump. Honey chicken? Good too. Perfectly juicy chicken inside, coated with a honey jacket that wasn't overwhelmingly sweet. Rich, spicy and bright sambal at the side too.

There were a couple of mediocre picks too though, namely the duck curry (tough duck), not-giant prawn (the curry wasn't great and the prawn was middling), and the squid curry (meh squid). But then again there was the fish head curry: layered, heavy and heady. And we sopped it up with some fantastic black roti canai: crispy outside, resistive and pillowy inside.

Those of you who work around the Pavilion area are pretty lucky. Nasi Lemak Ong offers up some great lunch set deals (RM15!). And yeah, best nasi kandar in KL so far, and we can only hope that they consistently keep that quality at the same level because goddamn it was good. Nasi kandar for dinner, and hokkien mee this morning for breakfast, it's almost like I'm back in Penang and not headed in to the office for another endless headless-drone day

We’re back to this blogging thing. And we mark our return with a trip to Topshelf TTDI, tucked away in the near-corner of a very quiet row, reviewed in a short and simple post constructed from notes written down on the phone in Simplenote. Link in the bio, peeps.

Soft launch was yesterday and the official launch is on 1st of July, so we're getting in early alright.
.
Bread: quite crunchy crust, very soft innards. The typical Gardenia-bred Malaysian will love this. Snarkiness aside, it's not too bad actually. Soft but it doesn't become gluey, thankfully. And it came with an alright-ish puttanesca sauce.
.
Wild boar tagliatelle: I hate parsley-garnish on plate rims. The boar needs more seasoning and could do with a longer braise. Bland, not much flavour, and all that effort is just wasted, really. The pasta itself is alright. Good for Sri Petaling, at least. The sauce, though, is slightly watery and again, a tad bland. It's made in-house but it does need a bit more richness. At RM35 too, you're looking at something a good deal pricier and worse than, say, Basil Pasta House.
.
Seafood linguine was much better. Nice, al dente, linguine. Squiggly squid offset by alright prawns. A good plate of pasta.
.
And speaking of plates, the plates are so old fashioned here. And the food came out in a very strange order. We were halfway through our mains before the starter finally arrived. Huge kitchen though.
.
Gamberi croccanti alla catalana: interesting filo pastry on the prawn (lovely texture) but unfortunately it completely overwhelms the prawn. Can't taste much of anything inside. And the diced vegetable base just doesn't work. Looks awfully 'cheap', the celery overpowers everything, and a softer base would be a better textural contrast.
.
The rest of the menu does look promising (porchetta salad, fusilli with chicken-pork ragu and white wine, 200g grass-fed Angus rib-eye for MYR 70, calzones), though artificially pricey for the area. And the ingredients and execution don't quite justify it so far. Early days though. We're keen to follow its progress, given our office is so nearby. And if it doesn't work out, there's always Sourakuya a couple doors away. Now if only Sourakuya would drop their prices back to what they used to be!

Foodgae finally made their way down to Ho Li Chow, a sort-of Nyonya kopitiam that's powered by, essentially, Aunty Sue's Kitchen. Yeah, you already know how this is gon be. Dishes are painstakingly made from scratch, and all that good stuff - but most crucially, they all taste great.
.
Like the lam mee. Mellow, homely, and understated, it doesn't leave much of an impression at first sip, but you'll be hard pressed not to finish off the soup. It's a deliciously subtle broth that quietly urges you on and on.
.
And like the nasi lemak. I love the rice here! So light and airy, more reminiscent of briyani than the typical fluffy coconut rice, but these are cute little short-grains of rice. Lovely. The sambal and the pork curry are alright, but it's really worth getting just for the rice.
.
Or like the laksa lemak. So so so good. I don't even like laksa lemak usually, as I often find them to be a sort of confused in-between bastard child of curry and laksa (asam laksa!). But hey, this was great. So addictively creamy, rich, fragrant, and tangy. And you really taste that base of asam laksa underneath, with the lace of coconut milk giving it a body that doesn't overwhelm.
.
Not everything is amazing of course. The pai tee is alright (much better shredded fillings than Limapulo but the shells aren't quite as crispy and crunchy), the cham is eh, and the bihun Siam is not too bad (I don't usually like bihun. This one is not that offensive though. It doesn't have the sticky/lumpy texture I detest, and there are zesty citrus undertones throughout). In general though, this jumps directly into my Return-Visits list. Plus they have dinner dishes! Have to come back for those, eh. May the over-ordering never end.

Shame. We love Monnalisa (fave Italian so far) and Uokatsu (only for their mentai rice and squid), amongst many others, and yesterday we discovered we love @butchercareykl too.
Upon securing the Australian wagyu MB7 sirloin for only RM90, we rushed down for a Tuesday quickie. It was good but guess what? The Hereford ribeye was even better.
.
.
So first off, the wagyu: very good. Only 200g so getting a decent char on it was always going to be hard. Came across as...a sirloin la. A much more 'clean', pure meatiness, thanks to the leanness of it. Very succulent, very tender, but ultimately fairly mild and in need of a bold sauce to bring out the best in it. It's...a sirloin. A great sirloin, but still a sirloin. I've always found they take well to more experimental sauces.
.
.
And then we had the Hereford ribeye (grain-fed unfortunately, but what's a girl to do). Wow. Rich, robust, and absolutely bursting with beefiness. It's not as refined in texture, but hey I'm good with this rugged bugger right here. Lovely crust (though next time I'll ask for an even crustier crust), lovely deep flavour, lovely rich fattiness.
.
.
And the sides? I really liked the broccoli. Super garlicky. Would have preferred it if the broccoli was not as soggy though - I miss the crunchy, lightly blanched broccoli in Canada. The onion rings were quite meh though.
.
.
Overall verdict: no-frills steakhouse serving up some really value-for-money high-quality cuts. Like RM80 for 300g of that Hereford ribeye. Come on, son. Fantastic. We love it.

Very new! Soft launch last night kind of new. It's a pasta place, taking over from Agak Agak in APW, though for some reason the space feels a great deal smaller. Oh well. Thanks for accompanying, @alisonkhong. Had the risotto (roasted beetroot, scamorza, pecorino romano, herb cheese spread) for RM30 anddd yeah I really enjoyed it. Beautiful plate, beautiful plating, lush and vibrant colours. Small portion though it was just about enough for me (a 2pm lunch after lots of bread and cheese at 11 or so), so maybe it isn't too bad. Visually striking of course, but how does it taste?
.
.
.
Pretty damn good, actually. The rice itself has a decent bite to it - much better than most of the stodgy, soggy fare that passes for risotto in KL - though I would have preferred even more of a supple, al dente finish where you get to taste each individual grain. They kind of get away with it here though because realistically each of your spoonfuls is going to be laden with those roasted beetroot bits that give it a much more prominent bite. The overall effect is a rich, umami plate that balances both the creaminess and saltiness, with capers bursting through, a smoky body from both the beetroot and the scamorza (though tbh I couldn't individually pick this out without looking at the menu), lovely salty pecorino throughout, and that dollop of herb cheese in the middle. It really kicks things up a notch. I expected it to be a typical cream cheese dip sort of thing, but the herbs are very necessary to lift and cut through the richness and perfume each mouthful with an extra layer of depth.
.
.
.
I have to return for the pasta though. It looked good from the other tables. And apparently they got a machine from Italy sooooooooooo

Good work, folks. I'm proud of the team. Anaki Boizu features an ostensibly Japanese menu (mushroom and calamari tempura, 3 types of kushiyaki skewers, takoyaki, karaage, deep-fried tofu, edamame and ramen), whipped up in a small open kitchen. And set your expectations properly for the dining environment: this is a tiny space popping up within InTunNation, tucked away on the first floor near Chequers TTDI. The results? Mixed, but generally interesting enough to warrant a visit if you're in the area.
.
.
.
The beef ramen is a bit of a misnomer - it misses out various elements of what one would expect in a ramen, as loose as the category is. But think of it as a beef soup and it fares very commendably. The noodles have a great bite and the texture is akin to hand-torn pan mee, the smoked brisket is very good (from Mom's BBQ? Smoked in-house? Surely not Beard Bros), and the broth balances the garlic and chili quite well. Good stuff. Would have liked to try the chicken ramen too (brined breast!) but we're running dangerously low on cash once again.
.
.
.
The other stuff? Bit more of a mixed bag. The mushroom tempura was decent but not very memorable, the shrimp takoyaki wasn't that good, and the skewers were kind of alright. Lot of sauce on both the chicken and the organ skewers but they were grilled quite decently. Granted, I'll probably head back to The Great Beer Bar or Maruhi Sakaba if I want better skewers at cheaper price points. We didn't try the dranks here but there was someone sitting at one of the tables who was dissing Artisan as having shit coffee so eh who knows. Maybe there's a secret coffee prodigy here. .

So is the Butcher's Love pizza (surprisingly good toppings and even more surprisingly, we fairly enjoyed the chewy crust) and the great bar bites. Could do with a Guinness and those curry popcorn shrimps with a beer cheese dip right now instead of having to shuttle over to a job I hate but hey, sometimes a girl can't be too picky, eh. Plus they only open at 11am. Until 11pm daily though! .
.
.
More on the other dishes we tried (soon, I promise, despite multiple broken promises and deadlines), but in the meantime rest assured the sweet potato fries are pretty good at least. Shio konbu and truffle aioli help round out the crispy sweet fries, and we left pretty satisfied. And yeah, they're pretty addictive. Grab some of these and some drinks for lubrication, and chill at that gorgeous lounge in the corner or at the arcade machines in the other corner or wherever really because the latest Bee interiors are gorgeous. You've probably already seen it in countless IG shots but it's still very neat irl. Go check it out. .

God, I miss Deen Maju. What a place. .
.
.
This curry rice thing is alright I suppose. A bit gloopy and gluey, with a meeker and milder mix of curries compared to the bolder stuff you get in Penang. Could be a preference thing, if you're used to this style. It's sort of like - to be a bit racist here - how the typical Chinese nasi lemak tends to have a sweeter sambal. Not my thing. But hey if you're in the area and you're looking for something not too expensive (I think it's relatively affordable for Singapore but TBH I've forgotten the price point) and pretty good for Singaporean local food standards (hey that's the only thing Malaysia has over SG, so let us have this), this isn't the worst spot for lunch. .
.
.
Also, I wish there was nasi Kandar up at Fraser's. That would be quite pleasant - smash a curry mix and fried chicken and wash it down with craft beer and lagavulin. Oh well. .

Great gyoza now available at Hanabi, glorious home of the mazesoba (and seasonal items featuring everything from chicken tantanmen to the latest tsukemen feature). .
.
.
Really impressive gyoza here. Some of the best I've had, likely one of the best in KL. Just a step below gyoza king in Singapore, which has better bite and resistance to the skin. And more substantial innards. And amazing sides. But anyway that comparison aside these are pretty damn good gyoza. 5.5/5.5 for the ambience and a good 6/8 for the food, on the aunty scale. By comparison, it ranks a lot higher than places such as the Kenny Roger's branch at TBS and the eggu sando at Family Mart Sri Petaling but then again rating and comparing food is always a finicky business. Which isn't to say 'aiya it's subjective la people got different taste' which by God, is such a cop out, especially when there are objective measures to discuss subjective traits etc etc, but rather to say that even keeping track of an internal rating system is hard enough. Unless you revise ratings each time you try a new item, and go multiple times to verify the consistency and judge how your feeling about it changes. And all that boring stuff.
.
.
.
Point is: may you stay open forever, Menya Hanabi. We all know quality food never stays that way permanently in KL so come and try it while it's still great. Try the mazesoba stuff first la cos that's their signature and it's super rare anyway, don't think you'll find another spot with it in KL, or at least not quite at this level. And make sure you add rice afterwards to the leftover sauce because I do believe this spot had some of my favourite rice in town. Places like Uokatsu talk a lot about their rice game but this place right here? I'll rice it up any day fam. .

Lawson's eggu sando lives up to the hype. Creamy and rich, despite being popped right out of the chiller, it's a good reminder that the Konbini life can be a good life and I'm saying that with the experience that one can only derive from having konbini-ed two and a half times in tokyo. Avid foodgae story followers will know we tried the Family Mart Sri Petaling egg sandwich recently. It's pretty dire. Best to stay away from that one. .
.
.
Oh, and decent onigiri too at Lawson's. Though I prefer the one at Onigiri Bongo (despite the intense saltiness) which isn't too surprising considering it costs a lot more. Yeah maybe I'll get that Tokyo post up sometime soon on the blog, eh? Give y'all a list of places I went to, photos, some words, all that usual jazz. Visitors may have noticed that the theme has been changed on the blog too. Part of a very, very slow revamp. Sorry, will get on it soon.
