1st try in this restaurant, and its dissapointing. Prefer chong qing and even tanyu is better taste than this.

For our main course, we ordered Riverside's signature spicy grilled fish with sea bass. After adding potatoes, instant noodles, cabbage and beancurd skin, the costs came up to around $50++, which doesn't differ much from other similar restaurants in Singapore (e.g., Tanyu).

Don't be misled by the amount of dried chillies covering the fish, as the spiciness of the dish was actually rather bearable (although we requested for the spice level of the dish to be reduced). However, it would have been nice if peppercorn was used as there was almost no numbness in the dish, which we thought would have been great for a signature dish.

The fish was great, as the meat was fresh and did not come with a fishy taste. The exterior of the fish was also grilled well, as the skin was crispy but wasn't burnt. Furthermore, most of the bones have already been removed so dining here is great for those of us who are lazy to debone the fish! 😁😁

The queue was so long you have to wait in line for at least an hour plus before you can get a table for dine in. Fast forward to 2021, Singapore now has four outlets and you can even order the grilled fish and their other signature dishes to enjoy at the comfort of your home.

When you order their grilled fish set for takeaway or delivery, the fish is separately packed in an aluminium tray while the broth is sealed inside a pouch to ensure optimal freshness. It even comes with a warmer kit to replicate the exact way of eating in the restaurant so that you can enjoy a piping hot grilled fish in comfort. We got the seabass fish in the Signature Fragrant Spicy Sauce, and you can select the spiciness level or change the fish to patin, golden pomfret or qing jiang at an additional top up, with add-ons of a variety of sides such as enoki mushroom and luncheon meat.

To go with the fish, we had the shredded pork with red & green pepper, stir-fried kailan with garlic and steamed rice for a complete dining experience.

Set meal comes with whole grilled patin fish, 2 bowls of steamed rice and 2 drinks.
We chose pickled vegetable base and added some add-on ingredients and it was definitely worth every buck. Broth was perfect combination of savoury and mildly spicy and sour. Surprisingly the broth wasn’t as salty as other grilled fish I’ve tried. This set was definitely worth the money. Will come back again.

Not being a fan of mala, we opted for less spicy to try their Unique sauce grilled fish. As anticipated, the fish came covered with heaps of chilli and a mala-oil looking sauce.
Frankly, the sea bass we picked was tasty, flavoured with the sauce that had a mix of spicy, sweet, sour and fragrance from some of the little spices in it. Particularly, the fresh, big cut onions were delicious with the sauce. So just a little touch from that was good, while we couldn’t take in too much of it thinking of the mala and the oil.
There was option to add ingredients and we were happy with the fried luncheon meat we added that went well with the dish. We also had their 拉麵 in 酸辣湯that tasted so mild compared to the grilled fish sauce.
This was a good adventure, though their food obviously would appeal much more to those who enjoy mala kinda spicy food.

Whole grilled fish for a decent price. Much cheaper than those chinese restaurants you to for zi char. The fish is fresh and sauce is nice and savoury. Garoupa cost $42. Optional to add on other sides to the fish. Atmosphere of the restaurant is nice and cosy, not overly smoky as well.
