Reviews

Finally dropped by the much-raved-about trendy Taiwanese establishment. The Gua Bao ($7.90) was oft mentioned in others' reviews so I had to try it for myself - while not mind-blowing, it was a good rendition of the taiwanese classic with thick cuts of pork belly heaped with preserved veges and peanuts nestled between a soft, sweet bun.

The Prawn Toast ($6 for 2 pcs), while small, had a thick layer of savoury prawn paste. However, the star of the show was the accompanying dip which I initially thought was a standard garlic aioli but actually packed a strong kick of curry leaves (?). Seriously addictive, and I wished I asked what exactly it was.

Finally, tried the Golden Chicken Mee Sua ($13.90) which was hearty and comforting, with an aromatic touch from the sesame oil and shaoxing wine.

Came by at about 11.45am on Sunday and there were just tables filled. 15min later the whole place was packed with a short line outside. My only complaint would be that the tables are a little bit packed too close together which doesn't make for a good date ambience.

Popular Taiwanese cafe, Abundance, has recently launched 4 new dishes into the menu. The two mains of Golden Chicken Mee Sua and Herbal Braised Pork Rice were clear standouts, difficult to choose a favourite between the two as both were equally yummy. The former contains tender chicken thigh cooked with sesame oil, shaoxing hua diao jiu and ginger while the latter has pork belly simmered in a herbal concoction. The lu rou fan is elevated into another level with the poached egg and pickled cucumber. There are also the Empress Sprouts with Crispy Garlic and Taiwanese Garlic Sausage to round up the new additions. The core menu also has the popular Red Hot Chilli Dumplings that are hand-wrapped daily and the Peanut Ice Cream Roll to round up the meal.

Unlike the fried rice, this wasnt piping hot. We opted for no corriander. The bun was soft and fluffy. The pickled vegetable could be chopped smaller. The meat was tender and fatty. A fancy version of kung ba bao.

The fried rice is very flavourful. There are bits of scallop and sakura ebi. If u want a basic fried rice, would toally recommend this.

The fried rice tasted like the wok hey one but with a lot more egg. A lot of chunky bits of crab meat so u can taste the sweetness of the crab meat. Overall, a good plate of fried rice.

My favourite of the night! I love chilli dumplings and I love knife cut noodles, and Abundance did this so right. The sauce was so good - a nice punch of vinegar to make it appetising, a light umami flavour to give the noodles the required savouriness, and a good amount of chilli oil to give the noodles the smoothness it needs and that spicy punch. I’m not sure if their noodles are handmade, but the texture was somehow really well done. A nice bounce with every bite. The pork and shrimp dumplings were delightful as well. Evidently huge from the photo, and stuffed with a generous portion of filling. Though it could’ve been juicier, having a bite of the dumpling together with the noodles is satisfying enough for me. Highly recommend this dish if you loved red hot chilli dumpling noodles! Don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
