@aftersbakerysg Ondeh Ondeh Lava Cake sounds good on paper, and should’ve been good in practice, but it wasn’t.

The sponge was thoroughly infused with the pleasant scent of pandan and was soft and fluffy, but that’s where the good stuff stops. The cake is pretty much guaranteed to induce diabetes thanks to just how ridiculously sweet everything was.

The gula melaka syrup drizzled over the entire cake was very sweet, the toasted coconut flakes were also sweet, but the worst culprit was definitely the saccharine sweet pandan lava filling. It was pretty much akin to drinking concentrated syrup. The whole cake was so sweet that I found myself turning to the also sweet coconut ice cream for some respite from the deluge of diabetes.

Yeah, this is gonna be a no for me dawg.

Trying this somewhat new bakery cafe that had opened at The Midtown for quite a while. Apart from serving up the cupcakes that are on display behind the counter, the bakery cafe serves up a number of mains and dessert under their All Day Breakfast menu.

Save for the desiccated coconut that is drenched in Gula Melaka, the Lava Cake felt more like a white chocolate lava cake than the Ondeh that it was supposed to be. The neon green filling did eagerly flow out of the cake with a cut of the fork but it seemed to lack that slight Pandan flavour that would bring it closer to the Ondeh Ondeh in terms of flavour. Texture-wise, the cake is a little crusty on the exterior; overall not too bad. The "scoop" of Vanilla ice-cream was mediocre however; while its understandably generic, the texture was unfortunately icy, not to mention how clumpy it simply is aesthetically.

I am always intrigued by cafes that carry the option of traditional Nanyang coffee — the one here at Afters Bakery was actually not too bad; a little bit thin but still decently aromatic whilst being not too sweet; food for those who prefer their Kopi to come not too heavy/strong/sweet.
