Years ago, during my practice trainee period, my colleagues and I would patronise the Queen Street outlet and order takeaways to bring back to our air-conditioned office. Without fail, my female colleague would take the teensiest portion of chilli and still have to force back tears, whilst another colleague of mine, one of those tanned and laddish "I love soccer" type of guys (he eventually set up @alexandrafootballacademy with like-minded ball enthusiasts) would whack the chilli with grand machismo... and sweat through his white shirt while constantly drying himself with three-ply tissue.

Ah, memories (of the chilli, not the sweat-steeped tissue).

Many ingredients- smooth glistening pieces of chicken, juicy tau pok, fish cake and potato packed in a luscious curry soup base. Gotta love this $4.50 bowl of curry mee.

Located at 531A Upper Cross Street, Hong Lim Complex Food Centre, #02-57/58, Singapore 051531. Hidden in a corner at level 2, we enjoyed this bowl of Curry Chicken Noodle from @ahhengccm 👍🏼 3 sizes, $4.50, $5.50, $6.50. We ordered $4.50 bowl and comes with plenty of tau pok, 2 fish cake, potato and tender breast meat! The best part is the fully soaked up tau pok in the flavourful curry which will burst in your mouth once u bites it! Some days you just want a spicy yet comforting soup to slurp slurp. This was not one of those days for me (!incoming sore throat!).

Nevertheless, the contrasting textures and flavours of beehoon and yellow noodle, which had absorbed all the coconutty spicy flavours of the soup, was really quite worth whatever sore throat that might befall me. Nothing fancy here, just the juicy tau pok and foolproof combo of 米粉面 that really stood out; though the odd use of chicken breast, while tender, seemed misplaced in this bowl of sinfulness.

Recall the next thing that you crave for. As for me I was craving for laksa and I knew this bowl curry chicken beehoon was nowhere close to a bowl laksa, but it's curry and beehoon! I was delighted with joy when I ate the tau kwa (which I normally dislike) as it was far from dry and in fact, I can taste the tofu as much as the curry absorbed in between the pores. Priced at $4, this meal is truly a comfort food with all the quality ingredients.

When I was doing my pupillage at a law firm in Bugis, this legendary curry mee was a guilty indulgence I’d revisit over and over again for that chilli so intensely and deeply smoky, chimneys wave white flags in surrender. The uncle who manned the cashier and took my orders (and is still there til this very day) spoke not a word of Mandarin, and whenever I placed my order he would repeat it in dialect, and I would feebly use whatever bits and bobs of dialect I learnt from my parents to confirm the order. He would always ask if I wanted hiamjio, and would insist I scoop it myself as I should be the one determining my own Vulcanian destiny.
