Ah Tee Ko Ko Mee (Jalan Besar)

Known to be a stall that lasted through generations, you do get the old school taste from their noodles. I got the large portion ($4.50) and it came pretty generous with ingredients such as fishball, fish dumpling and char siew. The noodles are al dente, but the chilli sauce is sweetened with ketchup which I prefer it without. I would say its not bad, nothing much to shout out for!

If you know what is Ko Ko Mee, you are revealing your age. This is from the bygone days when hawkers rove the streets hawking their food. So Ko Ko Mee comes from the sound of the knocks on a strip of bamboo to attract customers.

Still no idea what it is? Imagine fishball noodles mixed with the char siew from wanton mee minus the wanton. Get the idea?

This stall is one of the oldest Ko Ko Mee still surviving. It has been passed to the third generation who cooked my noodles today under daddy’s watchful eyes. Comes in $3 and $4 versions. I ordered the smaller portion.

The noodles were cooked al dente (as usual I ordered mee kia). Chilli saucy has just about the right amount of heat and it was piquant enough. Fish balls, fish cakes and char siew normal. The few bits of lard helped add flavour. Overall enjoyable but not fantastic.

I’ll probably come back so long as this level of standard can be maintained.
