What’s good to eat at Empress Road Market (a.k.a. Farrer Road Market)? One of the stalls you gotta try is Ah Wing’s Wanton Mee (01-108). Spot the stall with the longest queue in the hawker centre and you’re at the right place.

I was terribly impressed by both the wanton mee ($3.50/4.50) and dumpling soup ($4 for 5 pieces’/ $7 for 9 pieces). Let’s first talk about the noodles. There’s a pleasant yellow hue to the noodles and they are firm, elastic and eggy. Very similar to what you get in Hong Kong with the mild alkaline taste.

And the wantons here are delectable. Loads of minced pork filling is packed in each wanton. Plus the skin is soft and smooth. Char siew is of the lean variety. It has a charred, caramelised exterior that was reasonably sweet from the marinade.

Each dumpling was plump and meaty. The filling is generous where it’s stuffed with pork, a whole shrimp and black fungus. Very tasty.

Decided to add on the braised chicken feet (additional $2; or available separately as a noodle dish). It’s decent but I found it to be rather bony and dry.

Not forgetting the sauces, their dark sauce was a perfect concoction. The chilli had a strong taste of dried shrimp but wasn’t spicy enough for my liking. It tasted more like XO sauce.

My only regret is that I didn’t try this much earlier despite it being very convenient for me.

Ah Wing’s is open on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays during the CB period.

Most people come to the Empress Place just to try out the famous wanton mee from this stall. For this reason, you will also be met with snaking long queues pretty much any time you visit the stall.

The owner of the stall has years of experience, and has mastered the dish to bring the best possible flavors and taste for the dedicated customers.

Items sold here include Char Siew Wanton Noodles, Shredded Chicken and Prawns Noodles, Mushroom Chicken Feet Noodles, and more. Each is priced at $3.50 or $4.50.

I found the char siew to be delectably caramelised and had a moist texture with dark marinade. Noodles were also springy, firm yet light. There is a good reason, as the owners came from Hong Kong.

Regulars would tell you to add an order of Dumpling Soup ($4) as their swee gao are plump and tasty.

Honestly one of my favourite wanton mees in Singapore. The noodles are light and springy, and the dumplings are bursting with prawn and pork. The chilli and sauce bind everything together as one delicious and hearty meal.

The wanton mee from this stall has been on my makan list for the longest time and i finally checked it off yesterday. Overall, it was a very good plate of wanton mee; noodles were the rubbery kind with a very springy texture, char siew slices were lean and tasty but the wantons were the one that impressed me the most as each of them were so plump with generous amount of filling.

My $4 plate of noodle came with a generous portion of char siew and five boiled wantons.

The exterior of their char siew is caramelized in a thick layer of dark marinade while the texture is moist and tender.

The well-seasoned wantons are plump and there are bits of fats in the pork so there is some oil richness in the wanton.

Very delicious indeed!
