Alley Bar

Crafted from a previously derelict space from the 1900s, Alley Bar is an architectural gem that seamlessly weaves old world charm with contemporary design. The original space that separated two plots was roofed and transformed in 1999 to showcase the unique usage of land in the highly sought-after Emerald Hill conservation area. Featuring an airy ceiling dotted with hanging lamps, and a 15m-long brass bar complimented by a striking gilt-framed mirror. Go on, shimmy down with your favourite tipple in hand.

Walking around an alley can get dangerous. Grab some alcohol to disinfect. When so many people does it, it only make sense to build a bar hence named alley bar.
You notice the huge mirror on entry which is magnificently placed.
8/10. Would get drunk here again.

From left corner anti-clockwise: Lapsang souchong, Kaya king mai tai, Tommyโ€™s margarita and classic mojito. Everything was generally not bad, except that the lapsang souchong was way too smokey for our liking and kaya king mai tai was way too sweet. Experimental but Iโ€™d say stick with the classic cocktails.

In an age where there is high demand for white rabbit candy blended down into milkshakes, I cannot fault Alleybar's high-effort execution of a quirky idea โ€” a ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—น ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐—ฝ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ป ($18) cocktail.

The key ingredient was the Sailor Jerry gin infused with actual popcorn, imparting an agreeable dose of popcorn fragrance to the molasses-rich spirit. Mixing with salted caramel and orange bitters, the resulting concoction was savoury-sweet and slightly buttery in taste, matched with a hit of toasty caramel sweetness. I didn't find it particularly cloying, but I can imagine someone finding it so.

I'd liken it almost to liquid caramel popcorn, in a way which carried its own charm. Admittedly, I'm not sure if I want to drink liquefied popcorn and it didn't really appeal to me. But if you're one of the people who do, you're not alone since this was one of their bestsellers.

I genuinely thought it had a strong Islay Scotch base due to its intoxicating smokiness. Turned out the smoke a result of Lapsang Souchong, a smokey Chinese tea, being infused into vermouth.

It was quite the boisterous drink, as hints of herbal flavours bled into the intense smokiness, and the brighter notes of gin and orange bitters then elegantly balanced it out. With an immaculately smooth finish, this was my favourite off their menu.

Perhaps they had built a reputation as a cheap watering hole, but their new cocktail menu has convinced me otherwise.

The Milo Banana Rum-a ($20) is strikingly different from the chocolate-forward Milo cocktails we're familiar with. Instead, this rendition showcases a deft blend of Milo with fruity flavours, ranging from banana to cherry โ€” a bright and eloquently balanced concoction that steers clear from the cloyingness of other Milo cocktails.

A plate that truly lived up to its name! Caved into my chocolate cravings, and ordered this chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream and berry reduction- a combination that can do no wrong. My belly was satisfied with the richness of the heated chocolate, creaminess from the ice cream and the tangy berry sauce. To be able to dine amongst the chic ambience the alley bat definitely added to the experience.

Nonetheless, I did feel that the brownie could do with a little more texture, as the mouse-like layer was a little one-dimensional after a while. But I have no regrets as this classic sugar-nudge was still the best way to unwind the way, especially when slowly savored with a glass of prosecco and night of good conversation.
