We all know the famous Hock Lam Beef has been closed down long ago, and you would probably wondering why there’s still another one opening and carrying the same name.

Well that’s definitely a long story behind this reason, which I won’t explain it here. But what’s more important would be whether the taste is still able to carry the name itself.

Go for their supreme mix with tendon, so you could enjoy all the different parts of beef including the sliced beef and meatballs.

Choose from either soup or dry version, but both remain packed with all the ingredients.

I went for the dry version and glad that it is has the taste that I’m anticipating.

A short walk away from Raffles Place MRT station, Hock Lam is a shop specialising in beef noodles (both dry and soup versions). We personally like the dry version more, so we decided to order the dry beef noodles with beef slices and beef balls for lunch on a weekday! You can choose your noodles and we went with 粗米粉. The noodles were served with slices of beef and 5 beef balls, mixed in a dark gravy with some salted vegetables and ground peanuts added. Our favourite parts of the dish were the beef slices and beef balls, as the beef slices were pretty tender and the beef balls tasted pretty legit and had a pretty strong beefy taste. πŸ˜‹

However, we thought the gravy could have been a bit more flavourful, as we felt it become overpowered by the taste of the salted vegetables added to the dish. If you don't want your gravy to taste too sour or tangy, remember to tell the stall that you don't want salted vegetables!

The picture shows the large serving of beef noodles, which to be honest, we felt was a little small. The price of the dish, however, is on the high side and you should be prepared to pay close to $10 for this dish. Nonetheless, we felt it was a fairly decent bowl of beef noodles.

As the shop is near Raffles Place, it is packed with the lunchtime office crowd on weekdays so you may have to be prepared to wait a while before you can get a seat.

Now helmed by the 4th generation since its founding in 1921, this legacy brand is reowned for their perfectly cooked beef parts and robust gravy.
.
They've managed to strike a nice balance of flavours - the rich meaty savoury salty flavour of the thick gravy, contrasted by the vegetal salty sour notes of the crunchy pickled mustard greens, and mild nutty flavour from the crushed peanuts.
.
The beef meat ball is juicy and springy, while the beef brisket and shin is tender with a light chew, having meaty savoury sweet flavour.
.
The slippery thick bee hoon / rice vermicelli noodles pick up the gravy well. While I wish the soup was more natural-tasting, I love the sharp spicy sour notes from the chili as it has a good kick.

Had the normal mix which came with beef slices, braised beef, stomach and beef balls. Enjoyed the braised beef in particular as it was really tender. But the stomach (chewy but not tough and not gamey too) and beef balls (bouncy and tender) were pretty good too. Pair them all with the chilli for a kick. Really enjoyed the soup as well that came with some salted veg for added crunch and tang to the soup.

Only grouse is that the portion of noodles was rather small (got the small portion, but for $7.80 I guess I'd hoped for more)

I know I should be raving about the beef but the chilli here is REALLY something. Thick, consistent and not too sweet, I loved coating the bouncy beef balls with it.🍜

Without a doubt one of the better beef noodles, simmered in a herby light broth. Not sure if it was this day but my beef was overdone, and missing the tender pinkish colour I was looking forward to 😫

Soup was tasty and flavorful. Portion is pretty huge and definitely going to fill your tummy if you finish the entire bowl. Price wise, it was on the expensive side but for the quality and quantity, it was alright. Would try the gravy/dry option the next time!
