Chanced upon this new hawker stall which has recently opened its doors at Maxwell Food Centre serving up authentic Hong Kong snacks and desserts on social media recently, and decided to head down on a weekend afternoon to check them out.

Apart from sweet options such as this Yam Sago and Herbal Jelly being available, there are also other items such as the Water Chestnut Cake, Yam Cake and Carrot Cake being served up here (saw them slicing up the freshly made Water Chestnut Cake and Yam Cakes — they did look very good), whilst also serving up a Hong Kong-style Mochi Ball as well. Found ourselves going for the Yam Sago — done in Tang Shui-style. Served warm, the cubes of taro here provided a soft bite, the texture of the root vegetable having been broken down whilst simmered in the liquid for an extended period of time. The version of the Yam Sago here seems to come without the addition of coconut milk — the result of which seems to lack richness, though could perhaps appeal to those who prefer a cleaner taste overall featuring the subtle hint of the earthiness or the yam — makes it a fairly light dessert to even work out as a good breakfast item. The dessert also comes with ample sago pearls that comes together with the other elements in every spoonful; provides a good chew to the Yam Sago.

Whilst the Yam Sago isn’t quite my thing considering how I would have preferred it to be slightly more creamier and richer with the addition of just a dash of coconut milk, I would probably still be back to give the handmade Yam Cake and Carrot Cake a go, considering how good the former looked when they were slicing up one that came hot out of the oven when we made our visit. Also am fairly interested in their Hong Kong-style Mochi Balls; something which I hadn’t quite seen around yet. Do note their limited operating hours though — they are only open from 10am to 8pm on Monday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday at the point of writing this post.
