Baba Chews rendition of Itek Tim has its duck broth with salted mustard vegetables, seasoned with spices, green chilli and tamarind. Unfortunately felt that the broth was predominantly flavoured by the salted mustard vegetables, while the other ingredients werenโ€™t that distinct. Portion was quite small for the price tag, and our bowl was served lukewarm. ๐Ÿ˜”

The har cheong kai chunks were nicely marinated and seasoned. However, the waffle could do with a much better texture and it didnโ€™t have a lot of flavour on its own. ๐Ÿ˜” The drizzle of spicy maple syrup was a good help for that slightly tangy touch.

Tagliatelle in chilli crab sauce with sous vide egg and tempura soft shell crab. Unfortunately, this dish was a little underwhelming. Sauce leaned towards being more tomato flavoured and felt a tad bit one dimensional. Tempura could do with a less thick batter too. Service was friendly and attentive though!

For those who donโ€™t already know, Onde Onde is a classic Peranakan snack featuring a bite-sized green glutinous rice ball ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’š coated with grated coconut ๐Ÿฅฅ & with a liquid gula melaka (palm sugar) centre. I always enjoy that irresistible sweet burst when I bite into this ball of happiness! ๐Ÿคค๐Ÿคค๐Ÿคค

This OnDE OnDE cake ($10++) at @babachews really made my DAY! โค A modern take on the traditional kueh, this rendition features soft & moist pandan sponge cake layered with buttercream & gula melaka (palm sugar). ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹ Instead of using desiccated coconut, Baba Chews have coated its cake with fresh coconut flakes ๐Ÿฅฅ, which I felt was a good switch as the latter exudes more of the coconutty fragrance & renders a better crunch for layering of texture with the soft cake. ๐Ÿ’ฏ

Accompanied by fresh strawberries ๐Ÿ“, blueberries, crunchy buttery crumble & a drizzle of gula melaka syrup, this completes the masterpiece. ๐Ÿ˜‰ On our first bite, this cake screams SWEET, mainly attributable to the palm sugar. However, this does bear a close resemblance to Onde Onde & encompasses all the elements! ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป Best eaten with the tangy fruits to ease the sugar rush, & definitely good for sharing! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Being an iconic Singaporean dish that has captured the hearts of many โคโคโค with its sweet, savoury & spicy flavours, many restaurants have come up with fusion dishes revolving around Chilli Crab ๐ŸŒถ๐Ÿฆ€ & @babachews is of no exception. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Their Chilli Crab Tagliatelle ($20) features pasta in the signature chilli crab sauce, topped with tempura soft shell crabs, sous vide egg ๐Ÿณ & fresh cilantro ๐ŸŒฑ. Less spicy option is available for those who canโ€™t handle the heat well. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป

On our first taste, the sauce was predominantly tangy from the generous use of tomatoes ๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ…๐Ÿ…, which I liked because I am a fan of tomatoes! As we went for the original spice level, the chillies hit us on the second wave & we could almost immediately feel the tingling effect on our tongues. ๐Ÿ”ฅ The heat was moderate but not one that would induce gulping of water - youโ€™ll get that shiok feeling from the spicy kick! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป The sous vide egg also acted as a nice creamy binder & lent some eggy aroma to the sauce. ๐Ÿคค

The crispy tempura soft shell crabs presented a nice crunch, contrasting with the soft pasta. ๐Ÿ’• However, with that it loses the freshness & sweetness of the crab meat which I would have loved to enjoy with the tangy sauce. ๐Ÿ˜ Well, at least i didnt have to get my hands dirty! ๐Ÿคฃ

I would have also preferred the tagliatelle to have a firmer bite but overall, this dish was a decent rendition. ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป

In my humble opinion, there is room for improvement in terms of layering of taste as the dish felt pretty one-dimensional & heavy due to the richness in flavours. ๐Ÿ˜Š Perhaps adding some refreshing & crunchy zucchini shreds ๐Ÿฅ’ on the side would liven up the plate.

This bowl may look slightly unassuming but donโ€™t be fooled! I did my due diligence in researching on what was worth the eat here at @babachews & received intel that this X.O. Pork Belly Char Siew Rice Bowl ($19) was the crowd pleaser. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป True enough, my friend & I unanimously agreed that this was the better of the 2 mains that we tried! ๐Ÿ˜

Featuring homemade pork belly char siew ๐Ÿ–, egg sunny side-up ๐Ÿณ, fragrant Hainanese-style 'oil' rice ๐Ÿš & premium X.O. sauce (spicy seafood sauce), this is what I call a โ€˜zhng-upโ€™ (upgraded) version of the classic Roasted Char Siew Rice that we get at hawker centres ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹ - I had to explain to @hungryauds that this was the same as those char siew that donned a bright red coat, just less the colouring! ๐Ÿ˜‚

The highlight has got to be the char siew! ๐Ÿ’• With a nice lean-fat ratio, the char siew was juicy & tender, which gave an explosion of flavours especially when eaten with the special savoury-sweet glaze. ๐Ÿคค๐Ÿคค๐Ÿคค Although I would have liked it even more if the meats were more charred for the ultimate smoky flavours, this was certainly an enjoyable treat. ๐Ÿ’ฏ Try it with the X.O. sauce to get a savoury seafood umami that cuts the sweetness of the caramelized pork glaze. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

I was wrong thinking that the Hainanese-style 'oil' rice would be the same as that of Hainanese Chicken Rice! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Didnโ€™t taste the same (to me if reminded me of the steamed rice in Fan Choy) but I quite liked this savoury version too! ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹ Very fragrant & fluffy & most importantly, it wasnโ€™t greasy! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป The sunny side-up & crunchy blanched greens ๐Ÿฅฌ helped to cut any greasiness to make the overall taste profile a more balanced one.
