Bookmark this lesser-known spot for great food and friendly service for your next Indian food escapade. Order the namesake Banana Leaf Rice (from RM8) that comes with four veggies. And if you're lucky, the delicious slow-cooked Lamb Shank (from RM25) will be available — order it! But what you're really here at Bala's for are their daily specials, featuring seasonal curries and unconventional thosai flavours such as the Spinach Masala Thosai (RM9.50) and even a Beetroot Thosai (from RM9.50).

When at Bala’s and you’re offered today’s special thosai, take it. It’s almost always a genius use of flavours with excellent execution. Last week, it was this eerily green thosai, packed with soft buttery masala spinach, peas and lentils. I love that the filling was evenly spread out for a balanced bite every time. The thosai itself also boasts a touch of spinach flavour, fragrant and somewhat ‘green’ (if you know what I mean).

Comes with the same cabbage and coconut chutneys that appear with their other thosais. Not that you desperately need it. This is one baby you can wallop on its own.

A thosai as good as any, Bala’s plain thosai is soft and pillowy on the inside, clean and crisp on the outside. The fermentation isn’t pronounced, so you get less of the sourish thosai flavour. That leaves it even plainer and a perfect vessel to mop up that super creamy cabbage chutney!
