Bala’s famous beetroot thosai deserves all its fame. While it doesn’t have a super distinct taste of beetroot, some of its earthiness comes through if you eat the thosai on its own. Of course better paired with the carrot and coconut chutney.

It’s so weird how I only started to try appam this year. It made me wonder, how did I survive 25 years without tasting this magical thing? They have a famous stall in Bangsar called Chelo but up til this day, I have to try it. My go-to appam place has always been Bala’s, for obvious reasons. It’s a sufficient dessert for me every time I come here for a visit, and I hate sharing this food especially. I give people the stare whenever they try to steal my appam because it’s so good 😂 just the right amount of crispy and fat all in one. Couldn’t get any better than this.

Better than your average banana leaf! Curry was amazing, fried chicken was too dry though.

First stop on the Burpple team’s KL excursion: Bala’s Banana Leaf! Surprisingly light biryani, super tasty sides (that crispy fried gourd) and yummy curries, the only right way to eat this is with your hands.👌

Come by this buzzy Indian restaurant in Bangsar for scrumptious nosh that'll keep you belly happy. From freshly-made sweet appams with coconut milk to hearty banana leaf rice and uniquely-flavoured thosais, Bala's wide variety makes revisits worth it. Centre your meal around the Banana Leaf Rice (from RM8), and order the juicy Fried Chicken (from RM8) and spicy Mutton Varuval (from RM10) to go with it. Look out for their daily specials menu – if the popular Beetroot Thosai (RM4.10) is available, order it! The roti's colour comes from the beetroot juice, and pairs excellently with the housemade chutneys. Make it even better by adding an egg, which Burppler KarMen A. declares as ""all sorts of yummy!""

The pink hue from healthy beetroot juice is Bala’s signature daily special thosai.
Ordered one for my mom who never like thosai , and she wiped the plate clean! ‘Nuff said I supposed, yes, that good on its own or with main dishes!
