Found out about the new Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan whilst scrolling through social media one day; turns out, Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan is a pretty new addition to the local F&B scene. Located deep within the heartlands of Ang Mo Kio, Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan is situated at Blk 260 Ang Mo Kio Street 21; the nearest MRT station to the shop being Mayflower MRT Station along the Thomson-East Coast Line, though there would be some walking involved between the MRT station and the establishment itself. With the space being setup primarily as a takeaway kiosk, there is no dine-in seating available at Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan; the entire shop space is dedicated to being the food preparation area with a “food cart” being the counter space where the Banh Mi are being prepared. As the namesake of the shop suggests, Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan is all about their Banh Mi offerings — that would comprise of the more substantial food items that they serve up. Apart from the Banh Mi, Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan also serves up Bun Cha — think Shredded Chicken / Black Pepper Beef with Rice Vermicelli as well as Spring Rolls for those looking for something small to accompany the Banh Mi. Beverages available at Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan apart from Vietnamese coffee includes a Ice Kumquat Tea with Sour Plum.

Was skimming through their menu and thought that we should be giving the Signature Pork Banh Mi a go since it had “signature” in its namesake. Turns out, the Signature Pork Banh Mi is pretty much similar to the Banh Mi Dac Biet that is available elsewhere; one that features cold cuts, pate, carrots, coriander, cucumbers and sriracha. Thought that there was quite a bit of reliance of sriracha for that spicy kick of flavours in the Signature Pork Banh Mi over here — the red-hued sauce being drizzled over the various condiments in the sandwich. There seems to be a mix of pate and margarine being spread across the bread here, considering there was a somewhat buttery and savoury flavour profile that ran through the sandwich as well. Taking a bite into the bread, the bread is nicely toasted here; crisp on the exterior with a bit of tension to bite off creating a good chew — pretty decent we would say. In between, the folks at Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan have included two different types of cold cuts here; both providing a suitably saltish note and a meaty bite while the cucumbers and carrots created a crunch. Overall, a pretty decent Banh Mi offering.

Whilst we found the Signature Pork Banh Mi from Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan to be a pretty decent offering that is competent with most Banh Mi offerings that other establishments are also serving up, we could not help but to think about how the Banh Mi we have had at Banh Mi Saigon previously quite ruined the Banh Mi experience for us — the thought of how both Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan and Banh Mi Saigon are located in Ang Mo Kio was just something that we could not get over with, especially considering how Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan does seem just that tiny bit more inconvenient to get to in comparison. That being said, there was nothing wrong with how the Banh Mi from Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan is made; if anything, perhaps it was just the usage of sriracha being a bit on the heavier side — otherwise, the Signature Pork Banh Mi does work out to be quite an item which we would have liked disregarding the exceptional one that Banh Mi Saigon serves up that is another breed of its own. We had also tried the Milk Coffee (Cold) from Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan; pretty punchy from the caffeine with some sort of a chocolate-y note with a good balance of sweetness that makes it especially Vietnamese-style — definitely a good pairing with the Banh Mi here. With the Banh Mi priced from $5 to $6.50, Banh Mi & Coffee by Phan would probably work well with the residents in the immediate area for a light breakfast or light bite without having to venture out of their neighbourhood, considering the lack of options in the vicinity if one chooses not to walk too far out towards the direction of Mayflower.
