Happy National Day! 🇸🇬 What’s your favourite local inspired food amongst these treats to celebrate our nation’s 57th birthday?

Only available this August, the coconut pandan gula melaka cream puff by @baristartcoffee_sg is one not to be missed! Made using their signature premium Hokkaido BIEI jersey milk, you’d find the local flavours-inspired custard smooth, light and slightly milky. Featuring a pandan and coconut infused custard, coupled with a Gula Melaka filling, all encased in a uniquely crispy Choux topped with desiccated coconut. The luscious, oozy custard all revealed upon the first cut, exuding hints of earthiness symbolic of ondeh ondeh without being cloyingly sweet. Recommended for sharing.

The UI of their website absolutely sucks, very pointless.

It's got ondeh ondeh flavours, but quite safe really. Otherwise it's like their normal cream puff

We arrived at 2.30pm and the cafe was … filled! Waited for approx 20mins for a seat. For a cafe that remained packed to the brim past lunch hour, there must be something worth the hype. We didn’t do much research on what’s great for the mains and casually picked out two items that appealed to us - one of which was this creamy plate of carbonara. We love the al-dente-ness of the spaghetti, and the creaminess of the dish. The bacon tho, was a tad disappointing as the bacon strips were at least 50% fats. It turned out to be chewy and a tad gross/cloying at one point, and unfortunately it also goes without saying that there wasn’t any hint of bacon goodness. It seemed like the bacon were added for mouthfeel sake and I’d rather not have the empty calories! Other than the lil’ gripe over the bacon, the dish is otherwise satisfactory.

Simple joys in life is made up of a good sando! Aesthetically speaking, this might not look the best of the sandos out there but my, do not judge the dish by it’s looks! The toast was pretty crispy - altho it certainly doesn’t look as such. Pork katsu was crispy, tender and juicy on the insides. It’s paired well with a surprise sauce within - which we couldn’t quite figure out the ingredients. Miso perhaps? And of course, some Japanese mayo. Inevitably, the inner sides of the toast that came into contact with the pork katsu and sauces was slightly soggy - but yet not too soggy as there was a layer of cabbage (shredded) that prevented the moisture from the pork katsu from soaking through the bread. The accompanying fries were crispy and great! From the looks of it, it’s likely frozen fries rather than freshly cut/ sliced potatoes.

Nothing like a good ol’ amazing cream puff with milky goodness. My cousin was worried it might be the thick, cloying whipped cream similar to that of Chateraise’ and of course, she was pleasantly surprised to find the creamy liquid-y version here instead. We loved how the puff pastry is crispy and mildly sweet, complementing the creamy milky custard perfectly. Also, can I just add that the cut through the mega puff was oozylicious and definitely ig-able ?!

♡Matcha Cream Puff♡ [9 bucks w GST ($0.63)] (4.5/5) so I cannot miss this opportunity so I just decided to walk toward after eating finish 😅 so it's quite bitter, creamy and milky aftertaste. But it's so good tbh as I spilt in two day for eating 💕 as my stomach is weak after all 🥲
