For those who are working in the CBDs/Chinatown, you will be familiar with them. 𝘽𝙚𝙣𝙜 𝙒𝙝𝙤 𝘾𝙤𝙤𝙠𝙨 use to own a stall in Hong Lim Complex level 1 selling delicious and affordable protein bowl. They have moved out and open their own restaurant in 39 Neil Rd back in Nov 2020. We drop by their new cosy restaurant and they now serves a wide range of Starters, Mains and Desserts! They have recently revamped their Menu and ordered a few of their Starters and Mains. ⠀

Sea-salt Crispy Broccoli 🥦 is definitely da BOMB!!! Super crispy, airy broccoli that’s so irresistible! We are 100% sure even if you don’t take vegetable, you will get hooked to this too! A MUST order dish when you visits them the next visit! Also, there’s no additional GST or Service Charge too!⠀

I have been supporting them since early days when they are still a humble & small stall in Hong Lim Food Centre. I’m very happy to see them opening a new restaurant with their own space; despite the pandemic hitting us.

Gotten their bak chor rice which comes with generous amount of minced rice, topped with soft boile egg. The rice itself also wasn’t too dry.

Previously located at Hong Lim Food Centre, Beng Who Cooks needs no introduction — serving up their “atas cai png” within the food centre, they are also known for starting Beng Who Cares Foundation; an initiative that provides free meals for those who are in need during the “Circuit Breaker”. They have since moved out of their premises at Hong Lim Food Centre, and is now situated at Neil Road just a few doors down from Epiphyte. Serving up different menus for lunch and dinner service, the lunch menu carries rice bowl and salad bowls being served, whilst offering a good variety of tea and alcohol for beverage options; dinner would see a degustation menu being served — a daring shift away from what they were previously known for, apart from serving the same dishes from the said menu in ala-carte format.

Was torn between posting up this item and the Bak Chor Rice — both were actually really solid items that I would really crave for and return back here in the future. That being said, the Beng’s Prawn Paste Chicken deserves the mention more solely because of how they were previously known for their grain bowls at Hong Lim, and the serving of such a side is already a departure from what they were back then. The Beng’s Prawn Paste Chicken is essentially what it is; chicken mid-joints that are marinated in prawn paste with a crispy deep-fried batter; no-nonsense here, just good fried chicken with a shattering crisp fried batter on the outside that is also surprisingly light, while the meat comes all juicy, tender and succulent with the umami flavour coming from the marination — all coming with a chili dip that is akin to that zippy Hainanese Chicken Rice chili with a hint of Chinchalok that gives those weeks an extra flavour boost that also tingles the taste buds; pretty well-suited for those who are tolerable to moderate levels of spiciness.

I have not been to Beng Who Cooks while they are at Hong Lim Complex nor have known them personally, but from the stories of them on social media I would say that they certainly have came a long way; earnest folks who are making a living in the F&B industry, living through the grind with passion and the drive — all that whilst not forgetting about the society. Kudos to them and the other folks in the F&B who takes pride in feeding the community; its something we should appreciate as consumers. Wishing these folks here all the best in what is to come for them!

Grab an order slip, mark your choices and hand it over to order! I went with the smaller Hawker Bowl that lets you choose 1 carb, 1 protein, 2 sides, 1 fairy dust and 1 sauce. I had the aromatic rice, garam masala dory fish, sea salt crispy broccoli, disco mushrooms, crispy broken fragment and the cream garlic sauce.

Thought the portion of rice could be a tad bigger, but it was pretty tasty overall. The components complemented each other and were mostly well seasoned. Service was friendly and they are more than happy to share their pairing recommendations. There’s a bigger Towkay Bowl that goes for $9 with 1 additional protein and 2 additional sides. They also change up their menu quite regularly to keep things refreshing!

Hawker Bowl, $6. For a change today, we had healthy bowl for lunch! Healthy eating doesn’t means boring, this is a super tasty bowl which we really enjoyed! Homemade spicy dory is well marinated with their spices, those sea salt crispy broccoli were very crunchy and tasteful, makes me feel like finishing all the vegs! Yummy!!! @bengwhocooks .

Liked the ambition with this dish, but the execution just fell short of the mark. First, the good stuff. The egg was sous vide really perfectly, and would easily be one of the best ones we’ve had in SG. Also, their toppings are generally very interesting and out of the ordinary and Ah Beng tries to switch them up once in a while. The tempeh strips weren’t crunchy nor crispy but added a nice nuttiness to the dish, as did the fibre bits (though we’re not sure what this came from). The fried broccoli was also a unique touch to the dish. The glazed tofu was really bland tho, and tasted like boiled tau kwa, only without any taste. The honey sesame beef was also very pedestrian, and had no depth in flavour; it tasted just like sugar was added to it. The heart/core of the romaine lettuce was included in the dish (not sure whether intended or otherwise), which was fine, but it looked like it hadn’t been washed, and was also bitter. But overall, a place to try if you’re looking for a healthier option in chinatown, and also if you wanna support a young hawker!
