粥师父 is one of our favorite porridge stalls, a well hidden gem in the west. The porridge is always served in the perfect Goldilockian temperature. Personally i prefer my porridge to be smooth, consistency with soft grainy texture instead of in gruel watery form nor a baby paste food alike. The porridge never fails to meet this. The price is considerably cheap for a stall in the coffee shop. The porridge master is generous with the ingredients and condiments that i can shovel in every spoon. The sliced fish porridge is priced at $3 and the century egg with either chicken or pork is $2.50. This bowl of mixed innards is $3.50.

My favourite Vegetarian Bee Hoon 斋米粉 from Xin Yi Vegetarian Food 欣意素食, which I think is a crowd favourite too because there's always a long line for this, & on weekends if you're there at 10AM, all the good stuff would've sold out already.

You can opt for the Bee Hoon with or without sauce (this one is the latter), & choose to pay more for additional noodles or ingredients or both (hehe). The default plate costs $2.50, additional ingredients/noodles costs $0.50 extra each.

My usual and favourite weekend breakfast with my family is a plate of Black Chai Tow Kway (Fried Radish Cake). Opened from morning to afternoon (or till sold out), the unassuming Chai Tow Kway stall in Block 442 Coffee shop has a steady group of regulars despite the short operating hours. At $2.50 (minimum) a packet, they are usually sold out by the late afternoon so if we are there we will order 2 big plates (one of them with chilli) to share and pork porridge from another stall for a hearty weekend brunch. We would always order the black version as the addition of the black sweet sauce is simply irresistible. You would notice that their version does not have chai poh but even without the chai poh nothing beats the fragrance of garlic and the lovely wok aroma~
(Unfortunately hearing from my father the uncle behind the wok is retiring but his apprentice hopefully can fry up a storm and retain the flavours.)

Extra crinkle cut fries and baked beans please! Operating in the late afternoon, Jurong West Fried Chicken & Western food is my family's go-to western food stall and a place for me to satisfy my sudden craving for some no-frills chicken chop~

Better than any western fast food chain because it is affordable, good and convenient to get our hands on. The gravy is savoury-sweet which goes well with the tender meat. Also while crisp on the outside, the bun and thick-cut fries are soft on the inside.

As a regular, the uncle at the stall will always greet my family warmly and with our usual orders replace our coleslaw with extra baked beans. For that, we continued to frequent the stall for years and thus bringing fond memories.
