Chewy noodles with meatballs and minced meat
Meatballs and soup were flavourful
Price: $3

Just a comforting bowl of soup BCM on a rainy night. It’s been a long time since I last ate this and the wait was about 15mins at around 9pm on a weekend night. Nothing special about this bowl of BCM as I find it a little oily and the taste of alkaline from the egg noodles was present in the soup. Minced meat used were quite fatty and the meat balls feels like those we got from the supermarket. Nonetheless, their noodles are quite springy which kinds of compensate it.

This legendary dish has always been the talking point of Bedok 85, with a few similar stalls vying for the crown. I went as a Westie with no prejudice, without reading reviews of any of the stalls, and picked this stall by random as it looked like it had no queue. I thought I was lucky, until the owner told me it was a 25-minute wait. Might as well, since I have already traveled so far.

It was pretty oily, with lots of garlic oil and the fried shallots, though I wouldn’t mind as they helped to lift the overall aroma. I can’t fathom out the reason why it’s popular, perhaps the mince pork has a higher ratio of fats to meat, which personally isn’t to my liking. The egginess of the noodles was accentuated after being soaked in the soup that tasted strongly of MSG. Nothing too special about the meatballs either. Perhaps it’s just a comfort food dish, but personally I still prefer my Bak Chor Mee dry and I wouldn’t travel specially for this.

Ordered a small bak Chor mee soup for $2.50. Was this just me or was the soup a tad plain? there’s also the other thing about soggy egg noodles...

As mentioned in my other post, I still prefer the dry BCMs, but its definitely customary to get the soup version @ Bedok 85. And if I'm there, I'll go for Seng Hiang over Xing Ji.

The broth, meatballs, bachor, they're all just more flavourful than its neighbour (not that Xing Ji is not good). I just personally prefer stronger flavours. Perhaps the Xing Ji one would bode better when I'm sick and need a comfort bowl of soup noodles? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
