It seems that City Gate is turning into a bit of a little Thailand with the tenants of Golden Mile Complex moving out of the building in-lieu of the en-bloc sale — whilst not being at a scale of which Golden Mile Complex is, there are definitely a lot more Thai establishments that have moved into the building in recent times; this includes the likes of Diandin Leluk Thai Restaurant, which now operates in two shop units within the building on the ground level. Located on the second level right beside the outlet of Beerthai House Restaurant at City Gate that has also shifted out of Golden Mile Complex, Boraan Siam is a newly-opened Thai restaurant that has taken over the former premises of the now-defunct Lobster Air. The establishment features a pretty well-lit space with large windows bringing in natural lighting in the day, facing the HDB estate opposite City Gate, as well as that of Hotel Traveltine along Beach Road; the interior being one that is simply decorated with wooden tables and metallic chairs — a wallpaper replicating the look of red brick walls can be found running beneath the windows, while there is another wallpaper at the back of the shop that shows a view of a palace in Thailand. Boraan Siam is an establishment that specialises in Isaan -style Thai cuisine — the menu comprises of sections dedicated to Papaya Salad, Mango Salad, Yum Salad, Rice, Fried Rice, Noodle, Fried, Pork, Meat Salad, Stir-Fry, Vegetable, Spicy Soup, Seafood and Fish dishes. They also do serve up large platters that works great for sharing as well — this would include the Shell Fish Platter Papaya Salad and Jumbo Seafood Platter Papaya Salad as well. Boraan Siam also serves up some desserts — think the usuals like the Thai Chendol, Red Rubies and the Mango Sticky Rice. They also serve up quite a variety of beverages as well; apart from the usual Thai teas, Thai coffee and Iced Lemongrass, one can also look forward to ice-blended drinks and beer as well.

We were pretty spoilt for choice when considering what to order here, though we found ourselves opting for the Balacan Fried Rice since it looked really well-plated on the menu. That being said, the item did come slightly different in its actual presentation as compared to what it looked like in its illustration in the menu — pretty much putting the saying “photos are for illustration purposes only” into context. The Balacan Fried Rice comes with various elements nonetheless — this would consist of a stir-fry pork dish, sweet sausage, a sliced-up omelette, as well as some julienned papaya and red onions alongside half a lime. There isn’t a specific way to enjoy the dish — one can either have the various condiments on its own or mix everything up, though it would be typically enjoyed with the lime being squeezed into the rice and the onions and papaya mixed into it. We enjoyed the dish by mixing all the items on the side into the Balacan Fried Rice — just like how one would consume a regular plate of local-style fried rice with all the elements mixed in. We really like enjoy everything came together as one to provide the dish with so much flavour contrast — that sweetness from both the stir-fried meat and the sausage, alongside the tangy notes of the lime squeezed into the Balacan Fried Rice; there is so much going on especially when one chews on the red onions that just gives a zing that cuts through all of the carbs and meat. Texturally, the dish also had much going on; the meaty bite from the sausage and the stir-fried pork, all the way to the rice that was distinguishable to the grain — fluffy sliced omelette and crunchy red onions as well. Overall, a dish that was hit with us considering how wholesome and all-rounded it was especially in terms of flavours and textures.

Boraan Siam is an establishment that gave us a lot more than what we had expected — the establishment was perpetually empty when we had arrived on a weekday night for dinner; a huge contrast with the popular BeerThai House Restaurant beside them which was already garnering a queue for dine-in patrons. Perhaps that is much attributed to how Boraan Siam is a pretty unknown establishment in comparison to their neighbour; BeerThai House Restaurant being an established name within the F&B scene since its days in Golden Mile Complex, while Boraan Siam being a new name in the local F&B scene here. That being said, the meal we had was one that we found satisfaction in — there was not a dish that disappointed here; the Tom Yum Soup (Clear) being one that we were especially impressed with considering how they do not seem to have used much MSG here. They were also especially generous with the portion of seafood with the Tom Yum Soup (Clear) as well; we note that they had provided three mussels, quite a number of slices of fish as well as sotong that are all swimming in that flavourful soup that is zingy with a good kick of spiciness. There was also quite a number of prawns that came with the Paad Thai as well; the Paad Thai here being somewhat of a wet version that was a good balance of sweet and tangy notes. Prices are actually pretty reasonable — apart from the Tom Yum Soup (Clear), Balacan Fried Rice and the Paad Thai, we also went for the Garlic Chili Stir-Fry Pork and two beverages; namely the Thai Green Tea (Iced) and the Iced Lemongrass, and the bill came up to $48 for food good for two pax. F&B establishments serving up Thai cuisine are quite an easy find these days; that being said, places serving up Isaan-style Thai cuisine are pretty much a hard find still — for those looking for a spot serving up Isaan-style Thai cuisine that is located somewhat in town, Boraan Siam might just be the place to hit!
