Perhaps a new item on the menu based on my friend’s experiences here. The Hainanese curry rice comes with crispy pork cutlet slathered in curry, and an equally sinful braised pork belly served with a side of chap chye.

Overall, a very aesthetic plate of curry rice. Not as ugly delicious as hawker stalls selling scissor cut curry rice, and maybe doesn’t quite hit the spot in the same way. I don’t mean this isn’t a good plate of Hainanese curry rice, it’s just different. The curry here isn’t as starchy, but it is more aromatic though not super spicy. The pork belly was super tender and really melts in your mouth. My favourite was the chap chye, which was well braised - and I’d probably order that as a side on its own to go with the oxtail stew on my next visit!

Tried British Hainan with friends who live around the area. They recommended the place for its oxtail stew, ambience and friendly owners and I’m really glad we went! Interestingly enough, this corner unit with its bright signboard caught my eye as I was on the way to their place so it was really coincidental when they suggested having dinner here!!

We ordered the fried tofu (crisp enough, wasn’t too greasy, and went great with the spicy chilli), and 3 mains to share - oxtail stew, hainanese pork chop and Hainanese curry rice.

The oxtail stew was truly the star of the show. The broth was rich and savoury-sweet. The baguette slices were lightly toasted and made a great vehicle for mopping up as much of the stew as possible. The oxtail meat was really tender and fall off the bone, while the vegetables (celery, carrots, potatoes) were fork tender, infused with the beef aroma, and overall just delicious.

Must order if you visit British Hainan! With a bottle of beer or the Hainan Cooler to chase it all down.

A premium version but it's darn good! Loved the wagyu beef slices (and they were generous with portion too!), plus the gooey sauce that stayed that way until the bowl's finished. None of that stuff that turns watery halfway through.

Generous portion of oxtail with awesomely rich gravy. Carrot, celery and potatoes to balance it out. Reservations recommended. Limited parking in a nearby hdb estate.

I first heard about "British Hainan" from John, a software engineer at Burpple. Then, coincidentally, my parents asked me to join them when they decided to go there for lunch. That's how I discovered this quaint and homely restaurant located in a corner shophouse in Joo Chiat.
Its interior is filled wall to wall with the friendly owner Mr. Puah's collection of genuine vintage paraphernalia and antique curios - such natural conversation-starters they are. You can choose to sit inside amongst them or along the five-footway outside, which is where I took the above photo.
Although British Hainan serves classic dishes like Oxtail Stew, Braised or Grilled Rosemary Lamb Shank and Hainanese Pork Chop in the evening, it is the well-known "Wah Eng Beef Noodles" that you can enjoy between 11am and 5.30pm daily instead. Personally, I liked how tasty the thick sauce was, and thought the toppings in my bowl was pretty generous too.
If you are Hainanese, all the more you should visit this place because Mr. Puah is clearly, very proud of his heritage. Don't be in a rush when you are there. Have a chat in the dialect with him if you can speak it. Both he and his wife are very hospitable.

Hainanese Pork Chop is the star of this place. Admittedly the photo doesn't look great but it tastes better than it looks. Unfortunately my group had to wait close to an hour for our food, according to the owner its an anomaly because they were one chef down today. Anw this dish is priced at $15 thereabouts.
