The best in SG. Soft fluffy pillowy doughnuts filled with Nutella and topped with sugar crystals. They definitely do not skimp on the filling, it was actually quite messy trying to eat these doughnuts but hey not complaining! 😛

brioche doughnut filled with passionfruit curd

Burnt Ends’ doughnuts for the weekend! If you’re as indecisive as me, they have the ‘Pick Your Own Doughnut Box’ where you get to pick 5 out of the 8 flavours. We went with the new Smoked Japanese Yuzu, Iranian Pistachio, Lemon Meringue, Nutella and Passionfruit.

Was very long ago when we last had these, and happy they were just as satisfying as we remember. Doughnuts were pillowy soft with a lightly sugared exterior, and what I liked best was that they aren’t as oily - so it’s much easier to enjoy more at a go!

The new Smoked Yuzu was such a nice surprise. It was generously filled and well balanced in both its sweetness and tartness, along with a pleasant smokiness. Not sure why though, but the lemon curd filling in the Lemon Meringue one was much less compared to the others. We pre-ordered our box and did the pickup from their Dempsey bakery & highly recommend you do this.

Had been to Burnt Ends a couple of years ago when they were still located at Teck Lim Road — still remembered how we went all the way down there just to have the Pulled Pork Sanga which featured The Burntends Bun which is essentially their in-house brioche bun that is somewhat a testament to their know-how it not just dealing with meats, but also in baking that got them to end up supplying the buns to some other establishments (still remembered the short-lived Birdy’s at Upper Thomson Road carrying Burnt End’s bread). Fast forward to 2020, Burnt Ends Bakery has started operations as an online-based business, and they had since incorporated the bakery into a brick-and-mortar space with Burnt Ends’ move to Dempsey Hill. Open only during limited hours from Thursday to Sunday, patrons can now enjoy the bakes from Burnt End’s Bakery at the outdoor seating area of the restaurant.

One of the famed items off the menu of Burnt Ends Bakery would be their donuts; these pretty much sold like hot cakes whenever the no dine-in restrictions came in place as a response of safety management measures — notoriously difficult to place an order for when the pre-order slots for them are open. There were a couple of flavours to chose from during the date of our visit, which included the Coffee Cream and the Milo Dinosaur flavour; we found ourselves struggling on which flavour to get but eventually settled for the Pandan one since it is also the BB Kaya Donut that we usually go for if we find ourselves ordering a Donut at Brawn & Brains — one can only say it’s a habitual thing. Nonetheless, taking a bite into the Pandan Donut from Burnt Ends Bakery makes it clear why the donuts here are so well-loved; the bread itself is pillowy soft — there isn’t much effort needed to chew through the bread, not to mention how the Pandan filling would actually burst out from another end that has yet to be chewed upon. Coming with a generous portion of Pandan filling, we found the Pandan filling to be a little bit on the sweet side, though it is undeniably smooth and luscious; perfumes of an evident fragrance of Pandan that keeps one going despite being a wee bit too sweet than what I would have preferred it to be. That being said, I did like how the level of sweetness here is being controlled fairly well where they have decided to dust the donut in desiccated coconut instead of sugar — there is still a bit of a light sweetness lingering, but I liked how there was a dimension of flavours with that distinct hint of coconut going on in there that works as a classic flavour combination with Pandan overall.

After having tried their Pandan Donut, it is little wonder how there is a following for them — these would work especially well for those who are more particular into the fillings of the donuts; pretty much the same concept of the generously-filled choux puffs from Baristart Coffee and the now-defunct Shuu which were pretty much a thing some time back. That being said, those who prefer a firmer bite from the bread may want to look elsewhere. All in all though, the donuts from Burnt Ends Bakery is one that we found to be pretty worth the hype — not sure if it is one that will suit the varying preferences of the masses at large, but certainly one that is worth making the visit for just to see if this is a donut that goes in favour of one’s taste buds.
