Bara Chirashi and Avocado Soft Crab Shell Maki from Chirashi Tei located at 5th level of 313 @ Somerset within the Food Republic premises.

The Bara Chirashi was adequate for only $9.90 nett (U.P. $19.90 for Chirashi set), but I wouldn't mind paying more for premium quality.

Despite looking rather The Sushi Bar and Chikuwa Tei/Manzoku-esque with its thick cuts, this was like one of those Louis Vuitton bags from a back alley car boot that looks damn legit from afar but up-close you can see the uneven stitching and detect the foul stench of factory knock-off. While the salmon and yellowtail were serviceable at best, the tuna had as much personality as a 2B pencil, while the swordfish (mekajiki) fared the worst, looking devoid of haemoglobin and tasting like it died of drowning, all bloated with water. I got really sick of the sashimi three quarters in, which I didn’t get with the chirashis from the above-mentioned joints. For $23 at what is basically a food court stall (Food Republic), this is simply not acceptable. 3/5

Possibly the thickest, largest cuts of sashimi you'll ever get in town. I think this is $23+ with miso soup and fruit.

Been eating since 12pm – fried chicken, roast chicken and then a slew of Japanese dishes at the month-old Chirashi-Tei (the latest startup by Peter Teo, the reputed chef behind Wasabi Tei, Chikuwa Tei and Mitsuba). Standouts were definitely the Kama Shio (grilled yellowtail cheek); so tender and juicy underneath that crispy skin, and the Tara Nabe (cod fish hotpot); chunks of fatty cod, seaweed, cabbage and mushrooms basking in clear bonito broth.

A different type of egg porn this Monday: a signature that has been brought from Wasabi Tei to Chikuwa Tei, and now to Chirashi Tei. Super love how smooth and silky it is – I wish my skin was like that!
