They used to be at Chinatown area before they changed their name and moved to Bukit Timah Plaza.

Beside offering their signature ramens, now they also sell more items on the menu; including their popular chirashi.

I’m not really a chirashi fan, always prefer to have something cooked. So I gotten the anago don instead.

Similar to unagi but anago is the salt-water eel that smaller size than unagi. Both taste are pretty similar. Their anago don covered with slices of anago and you could find lots of shredded tamago underneath together with the rice. $24.90

1. Kaki chirashi don: the oysters were hella fresh, plump, and juicy. Did not expect to receive 3 pieces
2. Aburi chriashi don: smokey sashimi added extra umami to the overall flavour

At first glance, what caught my eye was the thick and chunky assortment of cubed sashimi and the generous portion of fish!

The egg yolk was not just for aesthetic purposes, but enhance the texture when mixed well with the sushi rice, making every bite silky and smooth. The chilli padi also adds a spicy kick to it.

Freshness is a priority for sashimi, and this humble eatery nailed it. There were no fishy smell and taste, which was a good sign.

Some Japanese restaurants overdo it with the marination of the fish but the flavour was balanced in this Chirashi Don and not too over-powering. If you prefer a stronger flavour for your Chirashi Don, you can always ask for soya sauce at the side but I do not recommend putting too much as it covers the clean flavours of the fresh fish.

The Spicy Chirashi Don also comes with a salad and miso soup at the side. For those with a bigger appetite, do order their Tamago Mentaiko ($3.90) which was delicious too. Get their unsweetened iced green tea ($1.50) that is refillable to cleanse your palate between bites.

A delightful lunch at a hidden gem.

From the new Chirashizushi Shou located at Bukit Timah Plaza; if this looks rather familiar in its presentation, it’s because they are opened by the same folks behind now-defunct Sumo-Ya at China Square Central, which have since re-branded and re-located their operations here.

Whilst looking rather familiar given its shallow bowl and coming with a pretty generous portion of fish, I do vaguely recall the marinated diced fish being a little more fresh during their time as Sumo-Ya. That being said, I did enjoy how the temperature of the fish and the rice remain consistent for this one, while the marinade did provide a slightly savoury note to the fish. The rice came pearly — distinguishable to the grain, while the diced cubes of fish comes at a size that allows one to have a good bite for enough texture and flavour; came in a good portion that allows one to have just enough fish with every spoonful of rice. Their rendition comes with an egg yolk as well; mixing it up provides a silkier touch to the entire bowl. One thing slightly different about the spicy variant here as compared to most others served at the various establishments around is how the spiciness is driven by chili padi instead of a house-made sauce or marinade — packs a punch without being too heavy, but tingles the taste-buds even for those who are tolerable to moderate levels of spiciness. Each set comes with a side of garden salad dressed in Goma dressing, and a bowl of miso soup at $17.90.

Chirashizushi Shou also serves up other items such as Donburi featuring cooked elements, various types of Ramen, ala-carte side dishes and sushi — a pretty decent dining choice to consider dining at for relatively affordable Japanese cuisine in the area.
