Newly opened in suntec after relocating from orchard towers. The sayur lodeh is yummy but wish the beef could be leaner. Pricey at $12.9. I really miss the nasi padang stall that was the previous tenant here

The paru was so tender and crispy, had to order two sets, not forgetting the sambal tempeh goreng oooh so yummy, sambal prawns so spicy 🤤 yummy! The squid had so much rich flavour! Definitely my new go to place for authentic Indonesian crusine ❤️

Helmed by Madam Loij, With over two decades of culinary expertise, she is the embodiment of vibrant Indonesian cuisine and tradition.
My fav will be the beef rendang.
Tender beef cooked in mild spicy rempah coconut milk.
Meanwhile little boss like the Ayam goreng. Pack with flavours, juicy fried chicken.

It seems that there is a recent trend of Indonesian cuisine going around the island; there has been an increasing number of Indonesian eateries which has opened across various locations of the late. Chopstix & Rice might be a familiar name amongst some foodies and those whom work around Orchard — a brand established by Madam Loij, Chopstix & Rice was founded in 2002, serving up Indonesian Nasi Padang in a shop unit at Orchard Towers. They have shuttered that space several months ago in lieu of their relocation to the basement of Suntec City Mall, taking over the former premises of an outlet of Gurney Drive by Penang Culture. Now seemingly a brand that is under or opened in collaboration with Neo Group that also operates Penang Culture, Woke Ramen, Fishball Story and Joo Chiat Kim Choo amongst other brands, Chopstix & Rice has been through quite a revamp from how they have first started out back then. The space has seen an entire revamp since its days being an outlet of Gurney Drive by Penang Culture; the space is now decked in a rather tropical theme — the large use of green and wooden elements matches well with the rattan decor and the tropical leave motifs that are featured in the wallpaper applied to the wall at the deep end of the shop unit. With the change of its image, Chopstix & Rice now features a fuss-free lunch menu featuring various Indonesian chicken and fish dishes with different sauces / curries paired with rice; the only side dish available in its lunch menu would be the Lontong. Beverages available at Chopstix & Rice includes syrup-based beverages like Bandung and Lime Juice, as well as other drinks such as that of Lemongrass, White Coffee and Teh Latte.

Visiting Chopstix & Rice on a weekday lunch service, we found ourselves gravitating towards the Ayam Lemak Set whilst we were skimming through the menu to see what Chopstix & Rice has to offer. The Ayam Lemak Set is described on the menu as “succulent chicken simmered in golden curry sauce”; it is also an item which is listed as a chef recommendation on the menu. It appears that patrons are able to opt for a vegetable of their choice whilst opting for any main on their lunch menu; choices of vegetables includes Sayur Lodeh, Lady’s Finger Belado and Kacang Botol — just to name a few. We settled for the Bayam Garlic (i.e. stir-fried spinach with garlic) for our order. Minimal waiting time is required for the food and the food is being plated while the cashier processes the order; this meant that the food order is ready to be served to the patron once payment has been made. First look at the Ayam Lemak Set and it is noted that the Ayam Lemak Set here also comes with Telur Belado (i.e. Hard-Boiled Eggs in Sambal Belado) on the side; the golden curry sauce is also generously splashed onto the portion of rice that is being served up. Digging into the rice and the chicken here, we note that the curry was delightfully creamy yet came with a slightly spicy kick that tickles the tastebuds especially for those whom have a lower tolerance to spiciness — the “Lemak” being pretty evident here; the gravy been good enough to have on its own. The chicken though was a tad disappointing when it came to the textural aspect though; we weren’t expecting anything more than frozen chicken being served here — that being said, we only could wish for the meat to be more moist and tender. Thankfully, the gravy of the Ayam Lemak Set did help with this one. The Bayam Garlic was just moist enough here; provides for a soft crunch. Meanwhile, the Telur Belado would probably satisfy the tastebuds for those who love spicy Indonesian-style sambal; while the hard-boiled egg was nothing much to shout about, the Sambal Belado carried a bright and piquant spiciness from the fresh chillies — definitely tantalises the tastebuds even for those whom are tolerable to moderate levels of spiciness.

Chopstix & Rice is one of those establishments that had been founded before the social media era; its name having been spread through word-of-mouth with their delicious interpretation of Indonesian-style Nasi Padang which they have been serving up over the years. Whilst we have not been to their location at Orchard Towers where Madam Loij had been the one cooking up a storm previously, we can see how regulars of Chopstix & Rice would be glad that they would still be able to have a taste of their favourite Indonesian Nasi Padang now that Chopstix & Rice has relocated to a more convenient location than where it was at formerly. Since we have not been to Chopstix & Rice previously during its days at Orchard Towers, we would not be the ones to comment on whether the flavours of the food has stayed true with this iteration of Chopstix & Rice. That being said, our impressions of Chopstix & Rice do seem to suggest that they are good with their curries and sauces; the curry gravy that came with the Ayam Lemak Set as well as the Sambal Belado were elements that we quite liked with what we have tried here — the quality of the produce used here (especially in the case of the chicken) was what seemed to have marred the experience however. We would not say that the dishes were average nor unappealing, though it was clear that it would be more impactful if they had used more quality produce for the food in general. Given how Chopstix & Rice is somewhat affiliated to a F&B group now and that they are located in a mall with quite a centralised location, it is needless to say that the prices or the food are a little bit pricey for some — the prices of the individually-sized items on the lunch menu ranges from $9.90 to $11.90. Whilst we wouldn’t totally rule out dining at Chopstix & Rice again if we are in the area, we do wish that they can look into improving on the aspects that we had mentioned — a spot that has quite a bit of potential if they manage to get that right!
