The Nasi Lemak dishes at Colonial Club come with not only sambal, but a small saucer of curry. If you like thick, moderately spiced curries, this one’s a good one. We enjoyed almost all aspects of this Nasi Lemak - from the fragrant, coconut rice, to the sweet spicy Sambal, thick curry and sweet sour achar. But the dory fish was a major let down. The batter was crispy when it first arrived and crunched very enticingly as I cut into it. However, it didn’t have the light crispness I was anticipating when I bit into it. Within minutes, the batter had turned soft and wasn’t crispy at all. The dory flesh itself was okay, but perhaps grilling it would be a good alternative to their deep fried-centric sides available unless they change the batter for this. Thankfully, the deep fried squid fared a lot better. The squid remained crispy throughout, and the tentacles part was the best to chew on. Maybe go for the curry chicken nasi lemak, or their signature nasi lemak tower instead of the fried dory.

Its signature Nasi Lemak Tower lived up to the expectations with the spread of quality ingredients. The short rib beef rendang on top was tender and delicious, while the thick layer of Otah at the bottom made the dish even more satisfying. Together with the chilli, achar, crunchy peanuts and ikan bilis, this was a wholesome dish that justified for its higher price.
We also had their premium fish soup with rice and crispy puff rice. This was light, flavourful and totally worth it with the large pieces of fish that were fresh.

A wonderful sharing platter to begin your meal. Stacked nicely with 3 tiers, it felt like the flavours got from light to heavy starting from the top. There’s kueh pie tee with some sweet shredded turnip and prawns stuffed in a crispy tart shell, and deep-fried ngoh hiang on the first tier. Pair with the refreshing, citrusy chili sauce.

Next, there were the satays paired with a slightly sweet peanut dipping sauce, and tasted rather ordinary. Probably the most memorable, were the nyonya fried chicken on the lowest tier. The crispy outer batter, was heavily spiced with turmeric. Biting off, the chicken meat within was well-marinated, flavorful and succulent. Served with keropok.

These colons are good at presentation: the décor is a modern IKEA version of black & white, the plating is attractive. Unfortunately, the food is just so-so. The rice in the gorgeous-looking Nasi Lemak Tower is too dry and not fragrant. Same with the so-called chicken rice. The garlic roast chicken has too much dry, white meat (tasting almost like turkey!), and the skin is not crispy. The fish soup with normal and crispy rices is yummy, though. Service is friendly and willing, but a bit blurred and forgetful. The nasi lemak took 30 minutes to arrive. Prices are high for a shopping mall basement-level eatery. I would rather pay a bit more, and have Peranakan dishes oozing in flavour at a proper restaurant.
