By the time I reached at opening time 6.30pm, there was already 5 in the queue in front of me and an unknown number of customers who had pre-ordered. For the record, you can pre-order from 4pm but they only start to pack at around 6.30pm.
And so I waited for my turn. And waited and waited until 7.45pm! By then the queue behind me was about 13 customers long.
The rice was fluffy and nice, the roast chicken drumstick moist and tender. The chicken gizzard was quite normal though I did enjoy its crunchiness.
A bowl of soup was provided free and the clear soup tasted of chicken and ginger. The fried chicken wings were crispy from the coated batter which had little to no taste but the meat inside was well marinated and full of flavour. My only complaint besides the long wait was the chilli sauce which was not spicy nor tangy enough.
But will I go all the way to Toa Payoh again and brave another one hour wait? Maybe not.
Had to queue a bit for this plate of chicken wings but it was worth it! Da Ji Hainanese chicken rice at Toa Payoh sells regular chicken rice but most people queue to buy their chicken wings. Crispy and constantly freshly fried - at $1.40 for a full wing it was really worth it! They also give you extra crispy bits if you ask for it.
Dare I say one of the best, if not the best fried chicken wings in town!
Da-Ji is a stall that sells Hainanese chicken rice but is way more famous for its fried chicken wings.
The stall only opens for business in the early evening and there is often a snaking queue outside of the hawker centre for its shatteringly crisp golden brown fried chicken wings which are juicy, tender and well marinated.
I personally find them to be better than Eng Kee (which is my gold standard when it comes to fried chicken wings) because the flavors of the marinade permeate through Da Ji's chicken wings whereas Eng Kee can be inconsistent at times. Eng Kee is however better if you are saving them for later or the next day because their batter remains shatteringly crisp even after reheating in the toaster.
I have always wanted to try the fried chicken wings from this stall after seeing so many good reviews and I wasn’t disappointed when I finally tried it!
There was a long queue on the night of my visit and I waited around 20 mins for my food and I must say it was well worth the wait! The fried chicken was delicious with crispy skin and juicy meat, while the rice was really fragrant! The chilli sauce was solid too, goes so well with the savoury taste of the fried chicken batter! They sell the fried chicken wings individually too at $1.40 per piece.
Look at these golden brown juicy chicken wings. They are encrusted in a crispy  batter and were exploding with savoury juices.
