The crust of any epok epok or curry puff is always important as it needs to be thin and yet be able to hold the fillings in well, and is crisp.Ā #MAKANBOLEH's Epok Epok crust hit all the right notes in this aspect. Moreover, it has a butter fragrance which is a plus point.

ThisĀ Sardin Epok EpokĀ came with huge chunks of sardine meat and small pieces of onion. On the first bite, the spiciness of the chilli pasteoverwhelmed me, before the sweetness set in. The more I bite into it, the more I love it!Ā Sedap!

If you are a fan of Epok Epok, wait no more! Give this a try.

Ended up here a couple times because the office crowd at Seah Im is insane, and thankfully this stall has a mercifully short queue. Decent lontong, but next time might add on more items (looking at the tempeh)

At this Malay stall, the real magic happens after 4:30pm (that's not to say their Malay rice isn't good ā€” it is!). This time is when the friendly aunties begin frying up Curry Puffs ($1) ā€” golden parcels carefully stuffed and then deep-fried to golden brown. These win points for their fragrant crust and hearty fillings. Tastemaker Miss Ha describes the puff to be bigger than her palm, and praises both the potato and sardine fillings for their robust flavours. She adds that the sweet-spicy sardine puffs reminded her of chilli crabs. Yum!

So mind blown that I just gotta write this now. Even as I was taking this photo, a stranger came up to ask where to get this.
Only available after 4.30pm from Mondays to Saturdays, I witnessed how each curry puff was carefully stuffed and fried till golden brown. Oily they may be, but I am sure these are one of those food that are truly worth the calories. The crust is especially important to hold those compact fillings, and rightfully fragrant. I am a crust lover, the folds predominantly. The puff is actually bigger than my palm!

Whether it's the sardine or potato filling, the flavors are robust. The sweet-spicy sardine filling with big sardine chunks made me feel as though I was eating chili crab and I wish I had some mantous to wipe off the gravy at that moment. Not a sardine lover? Try the potato puff then. Made with yellow potatoes of a firm and moist texture and slightly sweeter curry, these delectable puffs could get a little overwhelming with that huge amount of carbs. Curry leaf that gave a leafy herbal flavor was spotted too. Sinful but addictive. šŸ“Dapur Minang Dapur Melayu, Seah Im Food Centre, #01-36 šŸ• 6am-9pm,
Monday-Saturday. Curry puffs available after 4.30pm, Nasi Lemak after 7pm. No nasi lemak for now because they are shorthanded.

$4 for this food coma-inducing plate of sin from Dapur Minang (Seah Im Food Centre - #01-36)?!? Shiooook! Thereā€™s nothing more satisfying for me than mixing up rice with curry and balado for that creamy, spicy kick. The fried chicken had a really nice crisp skin too but what you want to get is their super tender rendang (didnā€™t get a photo ā˜¹ļø) that came with wobbly chunks of cartilage attached!

The friendly Malay aunties also shared that after 4:30pm, they start selling curry puffs and after that at 7pm, they start selling nasi lemak! Looks like a revisit is in order!

Sometimes while passing a Malay food stall at the hawker centre I give in to temptation and get these deep fried delights if I happen to spot them. These vegetable fritters containing julienned carrot and cabbage were satisfylingly crunchy and not too doughy, and served with a sweet and spicy Thai chilli-esque sauce. Great for a light afternoon snack or whenever you're feeling peckish.
