Miso Cheese Tart

$4.50 Β· 11 Reviews

This miso cheesetart is definitely a must-try here, one of their signature bakes. Though the combination might sound a little bizarre and odd for some, it was a surprisingly winning combination. A subtle umami flavour that came with a tinge of saltiness of the miso caramel sauce drizzled onto the creamy, luscious cheese tart- one mouth and I was sold! πŸ’–The tart crust was also firm, solid albeit a little crumbly with a lingering buttery fragrance that I adore! Though I would personally prefer a thicker tart crust, the combination of miso caramel with the rich creamy cheese just made my 1hr+ journey for this cafe was all worth it! πŸ˜‹ A quiet, peaceful place to chill over a cuppa too, though seats are pretty limited. .

Here I am at @prodigalroasters trying the freshly-made pasta dishes from the pop-up counter (only available from 24 Feb to 26 Feb, limited to 15 portions for each flavour each day).
Burnt broccoli and cream pasta, topped with fermented onion(not shown here).
Home-cured pork belly and caramelized cabbage, topped with special spice mix. YES TO THIS!!
Ended the meal with a long black, miso cheese tart, raspberry frangipane tart and pizza quiche. πŸ€—

Nestled in the quiet Yio Chu Kang heartlands, Prodigal Roasters is a humble cafe that is undoubtedly passionate about their coffee.

Greeted by the friendly staff and inviting aroma of coffee wafting through the room, the minimalist space complete with the white walls and wooden counters displaying their daily bakes are sure to send your mood soaring and stress levels sinking. And of course, my eyes were set on the in-house desserts. Sharing the Miso Cheese Tart and Lemon Meringue Tart ($4.50/each), the former was certainly an intriguing combination. The medium-light cheese (a tad cheesy, would have preferred a lighter taste) complemented the caramelised miso glaze well, giving the piece a nice earthy, savoury-sweetness. For the latter, the lemon curd was zesty and balanced with the sweet torched meringue. Not forgetting the buttery tart base holding the layers together.

In all, a wonderful spot to spend your mornings or afternoons, chilling with a good cuppa and handcrafted pastries on the side.

Get ready to be greeted by a strong smell of coffee brewing and a fair selection of pastries. Greedy as usual, we decided to get 2 tarts despite the 3 rounds of food we'd been through and no regret. At the price point, those tarts were satisfying. The lemon curd was sour enough for my liking while the miso cheese tart offered a more novel combination of sweet and savoury. Their coffee tasted rather mild with fruity after taste, and is currently using a single origin (Rwanda beans) from Nordic Approach. It was a nice place to chill and chit chat for tea-time (oh yes, they do have tea and chocolate drinks too!).

Had a little spare time in the week for a short coffee break β€” headed to the most convenient stop and ordered yet another variation of Cheese Tart that was available that day. A citrus berry sauce is drizzled at the bottom for a hint of zingy and tart flavour so that it does not run into the cheesy tart. Goes well with the velvety smooth hot chocolate here which was aptly rich without going sinfully thick and overwhelming.

We tried their Miso Cheese Tart ($4.50), which did not disappoint. The subtle taste of cheese was given a touch of sweetness by the caramelised miso glaze - I only wish I had more of it! My other favourite is the Raspberry Frangipane Tart ($4.50). It was moist with a cake-like texture and slightly grainy reminding me of a coconut almond macaron. Wash it down with a smooth cup of Cappuccino ($4) for a simple morning tea. .

This minimalist coffee joint looks like it belongs in Duxton or within the CBD, instead of a far out neighbourhood suburb that is a good 10-minute walk from Yio Chu Kang MRT Station. So if you find yourself in the neighbourhood, make the most out of it and have your coffee, tea and even squeeze in a small snack here. The Prodigal Roasters (by prodigal they mean wastefully extravagant in giving), keep their prices super pocket friendly and nothing costs over $5 here. They use Panama beans that are roasted in-house β€” these are also sold in packs of 250g ($15). The strictly standing-only shop has a narrow wooden counter for you to enjoy your cup of joe, but that shouldn't deter you from ordering their home made bakes. Everything looks and taste good here, especially the savoury Miso Cheese Tart ($4.50), which comes drizzled with a glossy brown miso sauce.
Avg price: $5 per person
