Ondeh Ondeh Cake

$10.90 Β· 9 Reviews

I am an absolute fan of Ondeh Ondeh and sweet stuff. So trust me when I say this cake is da bomb. It really brings the true flavour of Ondeh Ondeh. Plus the touch of ice cream on the side is simply excellent.

P.S what would make it even better is a drizzle of Gula Melaka sauce all over the slice πŸ˜‹

The City Hall area doesn't quite have a lot of exciting options for dessert. Luckily H remembered about Noosh at Esplanade. An Ondeh-ondeh cake is exactly what we needed for tea time.

You can find this on most of tables at the restaurant. I love the fluffy pandan cake and crunchy bits of gula melaka. A scoop of vanilla ice-cream may seem a bit much, but it really goes well with the cake. If you think you don't have enough room in your tummy for dessert, trust me. This will go down fast and easy, and you'll be left staring at an empty plate wondering what happened to the dessert that you ordered just a minute ago.

For regular diners of The Malayan Council, if you ask me which place serves a better ondeh-ondeh cake and ice-cream combo, I feel the cakes at both places taste exactly the same.

This Muslim-owned restaurant at Esplanade Mall serves an east meets west inspired menu. Its cosy, homely setting along with its mocktail offerings makes this an ideal location for special occasion dinners with family or friends. To start, share the Curly Fries with Bacon and Cheese ($12.90). For mains, spice lovers will love the fiery, tongue-numbing Smoked Duck Lemak Chili Padi Pasta ($18.90). The spaghetti is tossed in a coconut-based gravy β€” a twist on the traditional Malay lemak chili curry β€” and served with slices of smoked duck, fresh arugula and cherry tomatoes. Finish with a slice of their In-House Specialty Cake ($10.90) that comes with a scoop of ice-cream. The cake changes daily, so check with the friendly staff on what's available. If possible, go for the crowd-favourite Ondeh Ondeh Cake. The fluffy pandan-infused sponge cake is layered with a generous spread of gula Melaka and topped with coconut flakes. Pro tip: Be warned that a glass of water here is $1, and any additional refills cost $1.

Gorgeous layers of pandan green and gula melaka brown. Don't be fooled by the disarming brown though, for it packs a pretty shiok sugar rush. Its crumbly, grainy, sandy texture makes it good enough to enjoy it on its own, if you ask me. πŸ˜›

Not a fan of that icky buttery texture of the icing that will slip on your tongue though. You'll be prone to tasting it you cut the cake from behind. That scoop of vanilla ice-cream was a heapful though, but predictable sweet flavour vanilla essence is all you'll get from it. That said nevertheless, it was pretty creamy and it does go hand in hand with the cake.

Despite it being a staple in halal cafΓ©s, I've tried only one or two ondeh-ondeh cakes. Even if this didn't make me go "Masha'Allah sis sedap nye ni!", this one definitely rekindled my yearning for more renditions. πŸ˜‹ (7/10)

Anything half price or better will always be a deal for me 😊 Fluffy, light & fragrant sponge cake with optimal layers gula melaka & coconut flakes all over, each bite goes really well with the creamy melted & intentionally imperfect giant sphere of vanilla classic. Oh & I swear this has to be shared, that scoop's bigger than my fist.
Besides being a lovely creation birthed from the Chef Ummi's unique flavour profile, this also happens to coincide with this year's Pantone colour of the year. "Fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring"? Can't agree more.
