Fried Prawn Noodles

$10.00 ยท 6 Reviews

We returned after reading mixed reviews.
The initial taste reminded us of the Wok Hei we were expecting, but it soon fell short with the flavour lacking from both the stock and the chilli. The use of frozen prawns turned us off immediately.
Their grilled sotong turned out to be the star of the meal, fresh, tender and delicious. Enticed by the name of Dinosaur Pork Ribs, we expected it to be the Chinese style instead of western type of ribs. It was not bad though.
However, the disappointment from the fried Hokkien mee would probably not bring us back again.

This unassuming coffeeshop in Chai Chee is a favourite among the Burpple community for its Fried Prawn Noodles (from $10 for small). The noodle dish uses flat lor mee noodles instead of yellow noodles, features more gravy than regular fried Hokkien noodles, and is big on the wok hei โ€” the latter an absolute plus in our books! This dish is only available on weekdays, so time your visit well. While you're here, order the Fried Sotong ($10), which is crisp around its edges yet wonderfully succulent within, as well as the Black Pepper Crab with Korean Noodles ($40 for two crabs). Burpple Tastemaker Julius Lim loves how the chewy sweet potato noodles soak up all the black pepper flavour for slurp-worthy deliciousness. Gather your friends for a weeknight dinner โ€” the more the merrier, so you can order more, too!

To me, this was one of the highlights of the dinner. The Aunty who took the order was very candid: "Would you like the black or the white version?" she asked. "The white one," we replies. "Ok, we have time now, we will specially do a dish for you," she said. And we had our Fried Hokkien prawn mee. The slightly flat noodles they used was reminiscent of the KL equivalent of the Hokkien mee, however the flavoring and taste were distinctly Singaporean. The chilli was just nice. Lovely combination!

Many of these concept cafes and celebrity restaurants came with huge promise but most failed miserably in terms of the taste and price tag. If you truly want a good, honest and unpretentious dining experience, pop by one of our hawker centres or coffeeshops to have a sense of our identity and heritage.

Not once or twice but thrice that I am back here for the Fried Prawn Noodles ($10), which coincidentally is only available from Monday to Friday, and never was I disappointed with my food before. This is not your usual type of hokkien noodles but the version is slightly thicker with a little bit more wok hei.

There's this particular coffeeshop that I always past by whenever I am out for a jog and it will always be crowded even though of its slight inconvenient location but little did I know that it's actually recommended by many food bloggers previously.

Reference to @misstamchiak where she highly recommends the Prawn Noodles ($10) in her blog post, this dish is only available from Mondays to Fridays. It is a different kind of fried hokkien noodles, not commonly seen elsewhere as it is a variation of the wet and dry versions. You can clearly taste the wok hei from every spoonful of noodles and it gets so addictive that we wiped the plate clean within minutes. The usual seafood such as sotong and prawns were part of the supporting cast but the lead has definitely got to be the noodles, which is also different from the norm.

Prawn noodles too wet to my liking though it had a good amount of wok-hei flavour to it, sweet potatoes leaves were overcooked, chicken had a frozen taste to it and taste weird with the cheese sauce, same goes for the fried beancurd which doesn't goes well with the cereal.
