One of those irresistible dishes to me on a Peranakan menu! The rice is sautéed with a spiced paste made from the insides of the black nut. The result is a black canvas made of fragrant black inked rice, served with a dollop of the nut paste served net, in its bitter glory. This dish truly encompasses the perfect combination of umami and earthy flavors!

In a glorious shade of black, Folklore’s signature Sambal Buah Keluak Fried Rice ($28) is not your run-of-the-mill fried rice. Intensely fragrant and bold, the wok-hei was spot-on with a myriad of flavours - all spicy, earthy, and umami. The rich combination of shallots, candlenuts, chillies, belachan and minced pork coating the grains evenly. Though I had the non-spicy version, there was still a manageable tinge of spice and tingle of heat. Topped with a sunny side up, the runny egg was essential as the luscious yolk doused much of the flames and added a bright creamy savouriness. A must-order, one of my favourite elements in the dish was also the bits of four angled bean which provided a lovely crunchy and colour.

In the background we have the Ayam Lemak Chili Padi ($20++), which had a very flavourful gravy and was perf with the rice 😉💯 #folklore #folklorefamilies #wlfeats

Sambal Buah Keluak Fried Rice ($22) was simply amazingly tasty & I love the texture of rice! 🍚
.
Babi Assam ($22) was another mouth watering dish & wowed me with its super smooth soft yet not oily finish 🥓
.
Beef Cheek Rendang ($32) was braised so perfectly well in great richness & enticed me with its slipped-off-the-bone feel 🥩
.
Chilled Tofu with Pidan ($12) tenderlized my tastebuds & whet my appetite further 🥚
.
Peranakan Chap Chye ($16) was the weakest link in this meal as it was overly strong in flavor & slightly salty 🥕
.
Kueh Kosui ($6) was my favorite dessert as it was extremely soft, moist & not too sweet 🍮
.
Sago Gula Melaka ($8) was not chilled enough & slightly too sweet for me 🍨

(Clockwise from top left) Ayam lemak chilli padi, sambal buah keluak fried rice, babi assam. The latter two were outstanding. Like much of Peranakan cuisine, it's an explosion of flavours. But you can tell the chef is more refined.

If you love Peranakan food and large portions, look no further.

Tucked inside the Destination Hotel on Beach Road, Folklore serves an array of tasty dishes that will leave you wanting more.

The winning dish of the meal was the Sambal Buah Keluak Fried Rice ($22) which was super fragrant with the rich taste of buah keluak. Pictured next to it is the Sambal Kapitan ($26), which is an extremely spicy chicken dish on the Christmas menu.

Definitely one of my favourite Peranakan restaurants in Singapore and seriously, you won’t believe how big the portions are!

The original(apparently invented by chef Damian in 2001) absolutely smashes it out of the park with robustly flavoured, fluffy rice topped with a runny sunny side up and an extra dollop of sambal buah keluak for added measure. A must order!

Sambal Buah Keluak Fried Rice ($22)

@Folkloresg has been much raved for their local cuisine. This is their Signature and a Must-Try for anyone’s first visit! The Sambal BuaH Keluak Fried Rice had a seamless nutty texture throughout and was very fragrant without tasting overly charred. The sambal packed a punch and complemented the fried rice well. While on the steep side, the portion here is still comparatively more generous than other peranakan establishments so no complaints here.
