Truly hidden gem cafe in Jalan Besar. I love their warm & lightly toast Sourdough, served with olive oil as an appetiser. The vibes at night is quite romantic with oil lamp in each table, accompanied with groovy music. Best for date nights.

The guy ang moh (could be the owner) is really hands-on serving the customers. Service was attentive & excellent.

Ordered Death by Brisket & Lamb Peppers pizza.
The pizza is a must order, as the dough is special. The crust is crispy and inside is chewy like sourdough.

With Burpple 1-for-1 the price was really reasonable.

Beef brisket was very tough at the sides, the other portions are okay soft but not melt in your mouth kind.

Entire dish was too salty. Worst part was that one of the scallops was spoilt 😭😭.

Cldnt finish, this is my worse Burpple beyond experience ever.

Death by Brisket ($32+) is an interesting medley of flavours - the beef lies on one side with red wine reduction, whilst scallops lie on the other with a garlic butter gravy. The sauces are certainly heavy on salt and I would appreciate if the meat was a little more tender. But I love how the surf & turf concept was executed with such bold contrasting flavours, supported by quality ingredients! I must commend the impeccable service as well - the boss stopped to ask how we found the food, and the staff are extremely attentive.

Have you been thinking of traveling right now? Well, I do.

Due to Covid we can’t travel right now BUT we can find restaurants that have the “country vibes” to ease our ❤️, 🧠, 👀, 👄

It a table for two and we ordered the beef brisket, crispy barramundi & Margherita pizza.

Food verdict

The beef brisket:
The meat was so well marinated and soft it also come together with scallop/potato/asparagus & two types of sauces.

Crispy barramundi:
The crispy batter of the barramundi was cold and soggy but the barramundi meat it self was hot.

Margherita pizza:
What amaze us was they used a wood fire oven for the 🍕🍕which make the pizza more delicious.

Overall a great dish! Even though the beef brisket done in red wine sauce was slightly tough n salty, the baby scallops and potato side drenched in cream of mushroom sauce was delightful. Service could be improved though, we ordered beer during Happy hour but was charged full price, so double check your bills! Still, overall ambience in this little hole in e wall shop is very indie and laid back, so great place to unwind! Love their wood fire oven as well, bread is lovely with plenty of unique dips.

You don't always need rice for a grain bowl. At Sideways, you'll find grilled ribeye steaks and other proteins mixed together with leafy greens, with pairings like avocado and poached eggs to add flavour. Burppler Amanda Liu loves the Halloumi Fever, with comes with roasted aubergine, padron peppers, artichokes, and more. "Each piece of item is grilled perfectly with a hint of char with every bite. Mix them together with the hummus to give you a nutty fix and a creamy finish with the burrata."

Having steak for breakfast is never too indulgent, right?

Available only during the weekends on their brunch menu, pop by Sideways for their Ribeye Bowl between 10am to 4pm on Sat & Sun to taste this goodness by yourself!

This bowl comes packed with your choice of base (this was Mixed Greens +$2), topped with Mixed Grilled Vegetables, Avocado Dip, Grilled Padron Peppers, Poached Egg & of course, a perfectly medium rare steak.

You'd be surprised at how full you'd be after this bowl as it does fill you to the brim, in terms of flavour & stomach space.

Another registering item on my “completely worthwhile messy sandwich affairs” list; the beef brisket here was tender and bursting with flavours that nicely soaked the bottom layer of the in house baked sourdough.

Thank you Burpple the invite and sideways for hosting.

Medium-rare Australian Ribeye Steak

Located in an obscure row of shophouses at Jalan Besar, @sidewayssg is a café with brunch during the day and a woodfired casual dining restaurant at night. Its menu features a variety of Mediterranean-inspired small plates and mains, as well as Sourdough that are baked in-house using their very own wood-fired brick oven.

The food that they served was sumptuous and definitely exceeded my expectations. With an appealing pinkish hue in the middle, the juicy steak was simply tender and had a great smoky flavour too.
