More Reviews of good food at Dong Po Colonial Cafe

Yesterday once more .....

A pretty sad Sunday for me as today spells the end of Dong Po’s journey after a good six years .

Have been back to the cafe almost every other day since i knew about their impending closure .

Managed to pack my rum cakes and coconut tarts back home to savour ....

Got the refreshing Lemongrass tea today for the sweltering weather and the usual old fashioned coconut tart .

I will miss this familiar space and hopefully they will be back somewhere , somehow .

They closed their doors this Sunday at 24 Mar.
Really light and yummy Apple and Aloe Vera cake and wobbly bread pudding - omg I’m sad now that this would be the first and last time I would be having this. But oh well, but late then never.

Back at my hiding place at Dong Po colonial cafe.

Apart from my usual order of coconut tart , I was happy to see another of my favourites - the Pandan coconut cake on display .

So fragrant and moist with the natural flavour of pandan shining through and a little desiccated coconut to add some texture amidst the soft and tender cake . And at 1.50 per slice for so much love and effort - what affordability in this day and age where cafes are charging 7 to 8 dollars for cake slices that are mainly churned out in bulk from central kitchens ( or factories I call them ...)

This reminds me of a headline that I read somewhere on why would people pay 15 dollars for brunch but less willing to pay for a plate of wanton Mee which sometimes requires much more work , effort and behind the scenes preparation .

Perfect afternoon treat with a cup of their fabulous Kopi to watch the world go by ....

I hope places like Dong Po will live on forever ...
because it just preserves a past of Singapore....

The drinks were good and i really liked the coconut tart! Was not overly greasy, but instead, refreshing.

The chocolate cake was very average.

Regardless, it is a very retro place to catch up with fam & friends over tea! The place is also air conditioned, so thats a bonus

Perfect soft boiled eggs + crisp kaya butter toast + nice kopi $4.8

When all you need is just an old school coconut tart and a rich cup of Kopi for a splendid afternoon tea.

I like that the coconut tarts here are not overly greasy and not too sweet .

The Kopi -o here is one of my favourites . Rich and aromatic .

Loving this all time coconut-y treat.
Happy to say that standards have improved from
My last visit 👍

A place to get your old skool confectionary fixes. But be prepared to accept that the cakes are smaller than how they used to be from days of yore. Nevertheless the rum cake, 3 holes cookie, kopi are still worth our hard earned monies.

#throwback- Relish the weekends where mum and I have the car to travel to slightly inaccessible (by public transport) places in Singapore. My cake set had great traditional Yuan Yang and a moist enough carrot cake with a choke full of walnuts; that you get in every bite.
What sadly contrasted the carrot cake though was the pandan non-chilled slice that was a little dry.

This is my first time having breakfast in Dong Po Colonial Cafe. Ordered Set F (Bostock & Kopi) plus Chocolate Long Cup. The Kopi is quite strong but very good! Try dipping the long cup into the coffee, makes the taste even better for the kopi and long cup. The Bostock really amazing. Crispy, buttery with the fragrant almond flakes. Get ready to queue especially on Saturday morning.

Aloe vera cake

My default choice has always been the coconut tart however , these days I find the tartlets pretty overbaked and dry and the coconut seems to be less fluffy than before .

The Aloe vera cake was the star for today .
Incredibly moist with a not so sweet aloe vera purée - this was delightful to have .

Ehhh seems not a wise choice to have kaya toast here? It is not crispy at all. Nostalgic place but will not be back for the food.

Chocolate Truffle Cake was quite fragrant with thick layers of cream between layers.
Pineapple Tartlet was refreshing with a huge slab of pineapple on the top of cream and tart base. Quite refreshing but on the sweet side.

Coconut tart was fragrant and soft interior with a crispy tart base. Not too sweet which I liked.
Florentine Cookie bar had a nice almond crunch but was on the sweet side. Good to pair it with bitter coffee which I did.
Almond Finger was okay with a crunchy exterior. Not too bad but not outstanding either.

Moist, soft, fragrant cake. Sweet cake, bitter coffee. Match made in heaven

Looks promising but the pineapple filling was way to sweet and thick for my liking. The tart base was buttery and fragrant but the thick filling covered the taste of the pastry. I had to remove a portion of the filling to better taste the pastry underneath. A bit disappointing.

For $5, we got a coffee & choice of 2 homemade pastries. The coffee is flavorful but do ask for siusiudai (less less sugar) if you’re like us and don’t like things too sweet. Would recommend the pineapple tart and carrot cake (add 20c). The #pineappletart has a buttery pastry with sweet pineapple jam. The #carrotcake was tasty and not overly sweet but is a bit dense. The Florentine tart had yummy almond crunch but was a bit on the sweet side. Overall, pairing the sweet treats with the slightly bitter coffee made for an enjoyable old-school nostalgic meal

If this doesn’t get you out of bed in the morning ... ..... what will ?? 😝

I am addicted to Dong Po cafe . Everything about it os Homemade .

This is the best bostock in Singapore ( not that it can be found widely in the first place ) and it deserves some pretty good attention. I researched and found that the bostock is actually a traditional French recipe 😊

Crisp sliced almonds over a layer of frangipani and on to of a well toasted homemade bread. The bostock is very light and surprisingly not sweet at all so perfect for those of you who have Low tolerance to sweets.

Back here for this homemade quiche 😊

This quiche tart was a little underbaked and less crispy this time round and the filling a little under seasoned ( kudos to healthier eating 😊) but still lovely for a mid morning snack .

Price has increased from 3.80 to 4.20 😊.
Somehow , just over 4 dollars , things look a little more expensive 😱

But overall still a steal as compared to other quiches which may cost 6 to 8 dollars out there .

Thanks to Dong Po colonial cafe that I have had a taste of what a rum cake is. Rum cakes may sound unfamiliar to us but if you ask your parents - they are likely to know 😊

The rum cake was a rum infused moist chocolate cake ( almost with a brownie consistency ) wrapped with a plain Swiss roll and then encrusted with toasted almond slices and a think layer of cream. I actually grew to enjoy it increasingly with every single bite.

The pineapple boat was also very enjoyable with a buttery pastry and a slightly tart home made pineapple jam. It was like a gigantic pineapple tart only with a less greasy tart base and a pineapple filling that was less sweet than what is sold commercially out there .

My first time trying these 2 pastries at dongpo .
Do look out for the 5 dollars set which comes with any 2 pastries / cakes and a hot coffee or tea .

Very yummy , very value for money .
