Hidden in one of the back alleys of Dongdaemun Market in Seoul, South Korea, there is a stretch of stores selling grilled fish! Order a whole mackerel fish for KRW7,000 (SGD$8.10) and the Korean aunties will grill it on the charcoal grill and serve it to you with steaming white rice and a variety of banchan side dishes like tangy pickled kimchi, seasoned bean sprouts, marinated perilla leaves and more. It’s a cheap, filling and tasty meal!

We ordered 2 fish and the lovely lady threw in an extra whole fish for us free of charge! It was so nice of her (although the fish had a lot of tiny bones so be careful haha), and apparently it is quite a common practice in Korea to give free complimentary dishes called “service”.

Other than grilled fish, we also found a surprise on the menu—sotong! 🦑 In Korea, they have a dish called Ojingeo Bokkeum, which is a stir fried squid in spicy sauce. Don’t be scared by the bright crimson colour; it’s more sweet and salty than spicy, and definitely tolerable for all you mala “xiao la” Singaporean folks haha! Mix the sauce with the rice and it’s absolutely scrumptious 😋
