Mandi rice is a traditional dish originated from Yemen and the rice is cooked in a unique blend of spices. The rice is usually accompanied with a meat such as chicken, mutton or lamb shank. You don’t usually see mandi rice being sold in Singapore so if you happen to come across one, you definitely got to try it, which Abu Mubarak caught my attention when I walked past it one day. The rice contains raisins which gives it a nice sweetness and each plate is served with two kinds of sauces, one is a curry while the other is more tangy and spicy. We got both the chicken mandi rice and grilled chicken mandi rice to share, with the latter is grilled upon order, hence there is a bit of a waiting time involved. Even though it costs slightly more, between the two, I very much prefer the grilled chicken as it comes piping hot, with the nice charred bits on the skin and the spices sprinkled on top. The other chicken was on the drier side, but the mandi rice was the saving grace.
