Yet another new ice-cream parlour has opened its doors within the heartlands — Burnt Cones is the newest addition to the Sunset Way neighbourhood at Clementi, situated just a few doors away from the iconic Balmoral Bakery and also just opposite Olla Specialty Coffee (which also serves pretty mean waffles with ice-cream, though its focus is more on the specialty coffee), serving up ice-cream in both cup and cone options, as well as with waffles.
Went for both the Butterscotch ice-cream and the Strawberry Basil sorbet; the former being served on their waffle. Between the two flavours, our choice was for the latter — the Strawberry Basil sorbet does come with evident tartness from the berries, yet with a distinct note of zippiness from the basil that strikes a good balance — very refreshing to have especially after a heavy meal. Liked how the sorbet also comes a little sticky; all that without melting down too quickly.
With most flavours being offered on the safer side, we did wish they Burnt Cones had a little more character to set itself apart from the typical ice-cream parlour especially given its locality and how other new ice-cream joints of the late have seem to go into experiment on more innovative flavours (i.e. Hay, Gelato.) or seemed to have placed an emphasis on the waffle and cones that they serve (i.e. isee cream, 100labs). That being said, Burnt Cones does make for a decent spot for artisanal ice-cream in the area; would be interesting to see how Burnt Cones will fare against the competition in this neighbourhood in the long run.
