Experienced a wonderful date night at Fat Belly Social Steakhouse! We went on a weekday night so it was quieter, the service and ambiance of the restaurant were excellent and our server made sure we were well taken care of and comfortable.

We started off with the caviar, Uni & Lardo sourdough toast along with the grilled octopus & chorizo stew. The appetisers were light and tasty! I was worried about the sourdough toast being too strong-flavoured with the caviar and Umi top but I was pleasantly surprised that the taste was perfectly balanced.

The octopus was nicely grilled, giving off a smoky “wok-hei” ness with every bite. It was also very tender.

Then, we had the steak. Oh my god, the steak. I don’t think any earthly description or picture can do that dish justice. It smelled heavenly, and when I took my first bite I was stunned by how succulent the cut was. Smooth like butter, the meat melts in your mouth like our polar ice caps. Hands down the best steak I’ve ever had in my life. The sauces provided were good but I preferred the meat by itself for the original taste. The rib cap had a sophisticated taste, with the layers of fat providing a shifting taste profile as you chew.

We also had the Crusted mac and cheese with truffle oil. Again, wow. Best iteration of the dish I’ve ever had. The smell alone is enough to warm your soul. It was delicious and surprisingly, despite the truffle and blue cheese, it didn’t get “gelat”.

Lastly we finished our meal with the Eton Mess. What a misnomer! Eton mess? More like Eton best. The dessert looked beautiful and after a heavy meal this was the perfect way to end. The tartness of the passion fruit perfectly complimented the light sweetness of the ice cream and whipped cream. I found myself musing that the real mess is the fact that this dessert isn’t more common. I love it.
