Jalan Besar may be a utopia for cafe hoppers, but there are also some hidden gems worth checking out. #WLJK can be classed as a pub or bar -- the hundreds of bottles of alcohol on display attest to that -- but the food on offer is comparable to some of the best casual restaurants around. Its name is an acronym for "Wu Lang Jiao Kor" (literally "Got People Take Care" in Hokkien), so good service is assured.

The main courses were 1-for-1 if you had Burpple Beyond. The 𝗦𝗺𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝗗𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘁 was heavenly. Sporting a pink centre and emitting a fabulous fragrance, it was terrifically tender and flavourful. The baby potatoes were soft and delicious too.
