There are many reasons why I try to stay in a ryokan as much as I can. There's onsen, there's traditional Japanese room, and many came with an elaborate kaiseki dinner, with some served in the room.

My dinner at this very traditional and old ryokan at Asahidake came with a kaiseki dinner, which also includes a shabu shabu and this super yummy abalone. It's tender having been baked for long hours in salt, and it came with its own awabi liver.

The ryokan was also very thoughtful - on our second night, they served a completely different menu with no dishes repeated, while other guests had the menu we did on the first day. So that second evening they had to create two menu, just because we stayed a second night. I however wished they serve this abalone again.
