Not only can chicken rice be found at every hawker centre, coffeeshop or food court, it has also been “premium-ised” at restaurants. This simple looking dish might seem unappetizing at first as I’ve heard people saying how can steamed chicken and ginger garlic rice be so good together, but take one bite and you will know why this is our national dish. You can even customize your own way of eating by mixing in the chilli sauce, dark soya sauce and ginger paste however you prefer and each time, it creates a different experience. Coincidentally, chicken rice is also the one single dish that many Singaporeans miss when overseas and nothing beats the one back home.

I was out for lunch at Fengshan Market & Food Centre and stumbled upon Sing Soon Lee Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice, which had a long queue forming even at 1:00pm. Well, if there is one thing that we locals are good at is that we know where the good foods are, and that we will spend time queuing up for it. Hence, I decided to join the queue to try out this “kuay png” for the first time and at the end of the meal, I was amazed and satisfied at how good this was. At $3.50, it will not burn a hole in your pocket and yet deliver the satisfaction of a fulfilling meal. The poached chicken was tender and the soya sauce-sesame oil blend that was drizzled onto the meat was a perfect complement. The perfumed aroma from the ginger garlic rice will whet your appetite while the chilli brings a fiery kick.
