I don't mean to sound harsh but let's get this straight - please do not expect truly authentic tasting Japanese cuisine at this joint although the decor does its best to convince you otherwise. Somehow I feel that the food here has that "local touch" and I don't mean it in a positive "fusion cuisine" way (there was lettuce in their Chirashi Don...)
Granted a lot of effort goes into the presentation of each dish, and dare I say it, the taste even, but unfortunately (and I speak for myself alone), the ones we ordered all fell short of the mark.
For example, the deepfried crab in the attractive looking Soft Shell Crab in Rice Paper ($12.80++) was really crunchy but its citrus ponzu dip (which sounds good on paper) was too salty and sour. A bit of Japanese mayo in the wrap would have been nice as well, just to round off the sharpness of the components. Similarly, the Aburi Salmon Cheese Maki ($14.80++) got me excited at first with its thick slices of roasted fish but the cheese wasn't apparent and the sushi rice didn't have any taste. The aforementioned Chirashi Don was ho-hum due to the same lacklustre rice. At least, the quality of the seafood was acceptable and the accompanying miso soup was fine. Lastly, the Gyu Niku Teriyaki ($12.80++) which was suppose to be done medium-rare, turned out medium-well. Nonetheless, it's tender enough and came covered in the sweetish sauce. Unfortunately the beef itself didn't have much flavour.
Having been critical of the food, I should be fair and give praise where it deserves. The service here is commendable. Every member of the staff we encountered was courteous and attentive. Also, the menu is pretty extensive. Therefore, there's plenty of options. I noticed other customers tucking into tempura and curry dishes, so those could very well be their forte.
