Chirashi dons are quite possibly the healthiest bowls round town, given that it's simply just raw fish and other assorted seafood laid out atop a bed of steamed japonica rice.
Of course, when it's that simple, the onus is on the seafood to shine, and shine Kai Sushi's uni chirashi don ($20.90, if I remember correctly) certainly does. Although the salmon sashimi was a little rubbery, everything else was excellently executed. The fresh, plump and briny crabmeat, the fresh prawns that had a little snap to every bite, and the fat, briny, plump and sweet scallops which stole the limelight. The uni was captivatingly creamy, and helped the plain rice slide down just a little easier.
At the end of this lavish bowl of uni chirashi, there's a little triangle of tamago, which is slightly sweet and stunningly simple, yet is such a fitting end to a beautifully crafted chirashi don.
