Giving BAOBAO’s Asian-Western fusion baos a try — went for the Spicy Beef and Tempura Fish options; between the two, it seemed pretty much of a close call but if I really had to choose one, the Tempura Fish would most probably be my pick. Coming with condiments such as cabbage, cilantro, scallion, red pepper and salsa verde, the Tempura Fish comes well-fried with a crisp, golden brown batter encasing that moist and flaky fish within. Thought the accompanying dressing provided a slight hint of zestiness amidst the creaminess that was rather light and complimented the fried fish pretty well without being particularly overwhelming, while the purple cabbage and other greens helped to add a refreshing crunch to the whole deal. The Spicy Beef comes with chunks of stir-fried beef with lettuce, cucumber, cilantro, scallion and gochujang dressing; the gochujang dressing is drizzled pretty reasonably across the condiments of the bun and provided that light kick of spiciness — while the greens helped to add a refreshing crunch, the beef did carry a slight gaminess. Thought the baos here might be slightly on the verge of being oversteamed; whilst still light and fluffy overall, the leaf buns broke into halves relatively easily, causing a bit of a mess while some parts of the buns got stuck to the cardboard box as well. Still, a pretty decently-sized light bite that’s considering pretty substantial at $7.50 for two (or $10.90 for three, of two just isn’t enough).
