Fat Cow

1966 Wishlisted
~$60/pax
FAT COW first opened its doors in October 2011. The word “FAT” in FAT COW stands for luxury and indulgence, and is also a play on the word “Fatt” which in Mandarin dialect means prosperity. Spanning slightly over 3,500 sq ft, the restaurant’s design takes a contemporary approach to the Japanese “Wabi-Sabi” concept - the art of finding beauty in things modest, simple and humble.

Had been eyeing this since the start of Circuit Breaker.

I still enjoy dining home at my own comfort with food delivered right to my doorsteps. The Fat Cow Donburi arrived with cling wrap wrapped and there was a burst of truffle aroma once I uncover the bowl.

Particularly love their Fat Rice, fluffy white rice seasoned with their signature “truffle shoyu”.

The Fat Cow Donburi $48++

Gifted by both Cecil @shootandspoon and Cassie @cassakating, they are out to stuff me with food because they not only send one but two donburi from Fat Cow. Each of these dons is accompanied with a chawanmushi and miso soup as well. First up is their signature, The Fat Cow Donburi which comes with a base of seasoned rice of truffle shoyu topped with charcoal-grilled wagyu, an onset egg, alfalfa and drizzled with truffle oil. If you love beef on rice, this is definitely right up your alley as the fatty and tender-to-the-bite wagyu slices with the creaminess mixed in from the onset egg is a perfect match with the fat rice. Best of all, you will not feel overly truffled, as they don’t just spam truffle, they make sure its just the right proportion so that you will not feel surfeited. Next up is the Fat Foa-Gura Don, which is constructed over a bed of steamed Japanese short-grain rice and topped with glazed foie gras and wagyu. I am guessing there has to be a reason why the restaurant is called Fat Cow because as you might know fat = flavour, and the foie gras-wagyu combination will definitely hit your palate with all the flavourful notes like music to your ears. Thank you both once again for this meal treat!

On par in magnificence with the “21-Days Dry-aged Nagasaki Premium Donburi” ($138) but of a different kind as this beef flavour is more straightforward, is the “A4 Miyazaki Premium Donburi” ($128). As you can imagine, this flawlessly grilled fat-laced beef has the ability to melt in the mouth, triggering X-rated sounds of pleasure.
The rice bowl also contains cubes of Pan-fried Foie Gras (so smoky, creamy and tender!), as well as briny pops of Ikura (salmon roe) and Caviar. All of the above are arranged, together with an Onsen Egg, on a generous portion of deliciously-seasoned Japanese rice.
Served alongside are a bowl of Miso Soup and a Chawanmushi that practically explodes with prawn, chicken and mushroom.

Should you be gunning for a crazy jaw-dropper of a Japanese Wagyu meal, Fat Cow‘s expanded menu should be your first stop to shop. Trust this popular local brand to push the envelope when planning how else to improve on their already tempting options.
Gourmands and aged beef aficionados, you must try the “21-Days Dry-aged A5 Nagasaki Wagyu Premium Donburi” ($138) - it will have you quivering in ecstasy. Those thick slices of grilled beef have a decidedly complex and funkier flavour, coupled with a smoothness due to the breakdown of its fibre over time. Hand on my heart, I was swooning as I slowly ate each piece, wishing to have its taste burned into my memory forever.
