Community Chows: April 2018

From spanking new outlets to hidden gems, here are this month’s finds from the community.

Keong Saik Bakery

If you’re up to date with food trends, then the dirty/messy bun (aka zang zang bun) is probably on your radar. Keong Saik Bakery was the first to roll this out in matcha and chocolate ($4.50 each), but Burpplers have also given their approval to riffs by bakery chains like Breadtalk — lemon white chocolate messy bun ($2.50), anyone? Chocoholics should make a beeline for Four Leaves and Swee Heng 1989’s chocolate messy buns with ooey gooey centres ($2.20).

Tong Heng

If like Burppler Foodie Goh, you’ve been longing for the Coconut Egg Tart ($2.10), then you’ll be pleased to hear that Tong Heng has reopened after a month-long renovation. We’re loving the brand’s new look, but more importantly, we’re glad we can get our grubby hands on their egg tarts again! The Jurong Point stall has reopened too!

Ollella (Takashimaya)

Ollella’s latest range of puffs gets injected with Asian classic flavours, and the oozesome Flowy Gula Melaka Ondeh Ondeh ($3.60) should be at the top of your list, based on Burpplers Xing Wei Chua and Justin Teo’s intel. Other flavours include Bibik Santan Pulut Hitam, Swadeeka Thai Milk Tea with Pearl, Exploding Egg Yolk and Uncle! Kopi Teh Siew Dai.

Our Second Home

Next time you need a respite in Holland Village, leg on over to this hidden gem housed within Our Second Nature’s retail shop. Grab a cup of coffee, pair it with a slice of their baked treats (the butter cake with lemon glaze is a community favourite) and enjoy the peace and quiet. Shopping optional.

New Ubin Seafood (CHIJMES)

If their Hillview location is too far away for you, then this new outlet at CHIJMES might be the one for you. Get your grubby hands on the must-have Angus Steak, as well as other favourites like Burppler Jackson Sim’s recommended Barramundi with Sambal Cincalok and Petai, and Smoked Collar.

Alchemist (Hong Leong Building)

Working in the CBD? Get your cuppa on at Alchemist’s second outpost in Raffles Place. One of our go-tos here is the Dark Matter with soy milk (they use Bonsoy!). Burppler M * is happy to report that the service is friendly regardless of which outlet you’re at.

umisushi

This sushi chain hopping on the poké bandwagon is such a clever move. You can opt for either the mini ($8.90) or regular bowl ($10.90), then choose from three types of fish (salmon, tuna or a mix), bases (brown rice, soba or salad) and sauces (original shoyu, signature pesto or spicy Asian chili). The umi Poke Bowl is available at all umisushi outlets except Kallang Bahru.
