Dig In: The CBD’s up-and-coming vegan hotspot

This vegan cafe set within fitness lifestyle space Kilter Avenue is set to redefine going green.

The rundown
HRVST serves up a plant based menu packed with punchy flavours. It’s a convenient space for fitness buffs taking classes or training at the gym next door, but we’ll gladly make the drive here for the food itself.

The vibe
Set within fitness lifestyle space Kilter Avenue in OUE Downtown Gallery, which also sports a gym and an alfresco bar, the vibe here is laid back and casual, with a good mix of fitness buffs and CBD executives. You’ll fit right in in your favourite leggings, but you might want to leave the FBT shorts at home. Now you know just where to host vegetarian or vegan friends for a meal.

What’s good
For those who have always associated vegetarian fare with oily hawker centre bee hoon or soulless salads, HRVST may jolly well change your minds. For those who, like Burppler Leigh Khoo, are always on the hunt for delicious vegan cafe fare, HRVST is a dream come true. Every dish we ordered was thoughtfully put together, beautifully plated and packed with super punchy flavours. Get appetites going with the Fried Chickpeas ($5) tossed in Szechuan sour plum powder. Moreish with a good kick of heat, these go perfectly with a glass of their house wine — both the pinot noir and sauvignon blanc from New Zealand winery Misty Cove were fruity and easy to drink. We also really enjoyed the Seaweed Tofu Croquette ($8), fried till crisp golden and not at all oily, served with zesty yuzukosho mayo.

For main plates, we couldn’t get enough of the Pumpkin Gnocchi ($16), served in a tom yum broth reduction that tasted a lot more like assam curry. Topped with a good variety of vegetables and then drizzled with coriander oil, this was a light yet supremely tasty dish we’ll gladly eat for lunch AND dinner. Also good is the Hay Salt Baked Celeriac ($18), which might just quell the steak cravings thanks to its earthy, robust flavours — think onion puree, charred kale, tempura shimeji chunks and puffed wild rice. Satisfied and satiated, we weren’t inclined to indulge in sweets after the meal, but we must admit that our eyes lingered on the Matcha Ice Cream ($8) with blood orange puree, poached plums and pistachios. A return visit is in order!
