Dig In: Refined but Affordable Modern European

Once Coquo, Deuce now runs the show here, dishing out refined modern European plates at affordable prices (our favourite kind).

deuce-2

The rundown

The modern European Deuce runs a dinner only service with a concise and creative menu focused on sharing plates, as well as a complementary wine list. Despite having been around for some months (it first took over Coquo last November), the restaurant seems to still be in its early stages of trying to gain a crowd. After our very pleasant visit here, we really hope they do!

The vibe

Patrons who have dined at Coquo may notice that much of the interior has been kept the same, but Deuce strips down the formality for a more relaxed feel. The open kitchen still remains the main attraction here — grab a seat by the counter to get a glimpse of the chefs in action. Also, the dining area is now more open and spacious, with the addition of an alfresco area. We’re happy that Coquo’s playful, pop-art mural remains on the wall — you might recognise some of the famous faces, such as Audrey Hepburn and chef Ferran Adrià, pictured in the midst of a food fight. Whether you’re looking for a place to entertain your foodie friends or for a snazzy date night, Deuce is good for all.

What’s good

We asked for house recommendations and the waitress eagerly mentioned that everything on the menu was tasty (and her favourites), so we led with our gut to discover that everything was indeed delish! For small plates, the Deep Fried Kale (RM18) is a light and delicious veggie option. The greens are coated in sweet and tangy acar vinaigrette, and the dish sees extra crunchiness from a sprinkling of mixed nuts. Another must-try is the Roasted Pumpkin & Ricotta Tortellini (RM25) that comes with beautifully crisped pumpkin sitting on top of pillowy, ricotta-stuffed tortellini. Rich, yes, but a very aromatic dish, thanks to the use of deep-fried sage and curry oil. If you had to pick just one from big plates, the Typhoon Shelter Crab Spaghetti (RM37) is Deuce’s winning interpretation of the age-old chilli garlic ‘Typhoon Shelter style’ dish. Spicy and super garlicky, the flavours are intense but addictive. Wine comes by the glass or by the bottle, and Deuce stocks selections from around the globe including Spain, Italy, and Australia. Just ask the friendly team to help you pick a good one out!

If there is space for dessert, the Avocado (RM18) is one to tease your senses. What looks deceptively alike the fruit is in fact, a very well thought-out dessert. Creamy avocado and pandan infused ice-cream is layered over coconut glutinous rice, before being scooped back into the fruit’s halved shells — seed included! It’s also served with a side of kerisik (grated coconut), which adds a sweet, crunchy bite.
